Many people usually associate ancient Greece with monogamy and while this is true, it's only a half-truth. Ancient Greeks married only one woman but they also had concubines (called pallakes) especially women who were either of a lower class or captives of war. The difference is that those concubines didn't have their children inherit any property as the children of concubines from ancient China. It's really annoying interesting information, don't you think? Please, feel free to correct any information.

Interesting, and welcome to the forum!

There were also concubines in the Roman Empire, but they were single women who lived with men who were not their husbands. Since the men didn't have wives they could eventually be married. It wasn't considered dishonorable in the Roman Empire.

In the Ottoman Empire, concubines were slave women who were taken for sexual reproduction and to emphasize the patriarchal nature of the Empire. They were also typically part of a harem. We visited Istanbul many years ago and toured the locations where the harems and concubines were located. It was fascinating, as were many aspects of the Ottoman Empire.

I had a home in Istanbul that overlooked the Bosphorus. On the European side.

Interesting, yes. Annoying?

Slavery has been around since mankind stood on 2 legs and said" Ugh, ugh, you my bee-otch now." Getting "annoyed" at history seems an odd reaction.
