Amazon will not build a headquarters in New York following mounting opposition, the company said in a statement Thursday.

Amazon said it does not have plans to reopen the search for a replacement location. The company will continue to build its planned headquarters in Virginia and its other planned location in Nashville.

Last week, The Washington Post first reported that Amazon executives were considering backing out of its plans to build an office in the Long Island City neighborhood of New York.

"While polls show that 70 percent of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City," Amazon said in the statement. The company said it will continue to grow the teams it already has in Staten Island, Brooklyn and Manhattan.

This is thanks to those radical Democrats in NY including AOC.

I was actually looking forward to possibly working for Amazon in NY if they had some senior engineering positions. And in terms of lower skilled workers, I know people who moved to New Jersey to work for Amazon there. Having an Amazon HQ in NY would have been good for the city.

AOC made it seem that this was a victory. I don't think this helps any of the poor people working in AOC's district.

Well that's certainly a shame. An Amazon office employing lots of people would have been great for the area.

But I didn't think Long Island City was AOC's district. I thought LIC was in the 12th district.

The radicial democrats have made it clear they are anti-wealth. They care more about providing benefits to people that do not want to work rather than help those that want to prosper.

But people in AOC's district could get jobs in LIC. It's not far away. For younger people working at McDonald's, working at Amazon would be a big improvement.

The bottom line is a politician is supposed to improve the lives of the people in their district. People can't eat platitudes and idealism. You have to have a balance.

I agree with all of that. I don't follow AOC the way everyone else on here does so I don't know what she did to talk Amazon out of this.

It's not just AOC but she cheered the loss of these 25,000 Amazon jobs, many of which are high paying.

Many New Yorkers have been critical of the Amazon HQ2 deal because of concerns about workers coming in from other cities. Even though the corporation said that it will hire local residents, New York Congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, expressed fear that if New Yorkers are hired, they will receive low wages and endure grueling work conditions. Ocasio-Cortez cheered the news about Amazon possibly pulling out of New York on Twitter.

‘Can everyday people come together and effectively organize against creeping overreach of one of the world’s biggest corporations? Yes, they can,’ tweeted Ocasio-Cortez.

Amazon disputes the claims that they will push out local businesses and residents.

Let's assume that these were terrible jobs. Why would people take these terrible jobs if they had better options? How have you improved their lives by taking away 25,000 terrible jobs that they would have taken?

Especially sad after Amazon caved and instituted a $15 minimum wage. I can see why AOC wouldn't want them near her constituents.

Fine, but why would anyone take those jobs if there were better options?

How would have younger people working at McDonalds been able to get tech and engineering jobs at Amazon?
I don't care either way just wondering.

Bad news for those looking for work in NYC. I would like to see them increase the facility in Virginia as a result helping those looking for work in my state.

Congratulations, New York! We did it! Organized dissent works. Now maybe that money that was going to go towards tax subsidies for Amazon can go towards fixing the subway, @NYGovCuomo @NYCMayor! #AmazonHQ2 https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1096088201364717568

Obviously a disciple of AO C ( cups)!! #HARHAR

You'd be surprised how many liberals dodn't see how stupid this tweet is!

It seems Eliza Orlins doesn't understand how tax subsidies work. How can we be represented by people who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about?

I don't know, I guess they wouldn't. so you're saying LI needs those jobs?

Not LI, Long Island City in Queens. If the people there don't need the jobs they won't take them and Amazon would have to improve their offer. More jobs is better for all workers becomes employers have to compete for workers. More jobs is always better.

but then how do you ever take a stand against corporations like amazon?

but then how do you ever take a stand against corporations like amazon?

That's a difficult question. I think it has to be handled nationally but the problem is global.

Different regions have different corporate taxes. It becomes a race to the bottom as localities try to make themselves appealing to corporations. I think there should be a fixed corporate state tax rate and breaks should be given only to regions that are economically depressed.

I don't think I have a solution. Maybe we should consider eliminating the corporate tax and just taxing dividends and capital gains at a higher rate.

The facts of life, as always , are conservative.

Liberals can rant all they want about tax breaks for the rich,....trickle down doesn't work and all the usual class warrior cliches but when a corporate giant like Amazon is thinking about moving to THEIR city, you can bet that trickle down will all of a sudden work!

I don't think you understand what trickle down means.

And we're still waiting for that huge economic boom from the corporate tax cuts that would pay for themselves.

Minus 25,000 possible new jobs. That is the victory.

A shoutout to Amazon.

Why help a city like New York City and a state like New York?

They do not deserve it.

Go somewhere where Amazon will be appreciated.

Good job, New York politicians. You just scared away good-paying jobs.

I don't think you understand what trickle down means.

Well since there is no such economic theory- it can mean anything anybody wants, so please spare the lectures on what I know or don't know.
But at least some liberals say its giving tax breaks to the rich so they'll create jobs. Wel isn't that exactly what NY did with Amazon and VA is most assuredly doing ?

Oh and by the way - I 'm assuming all the municipalities who offered tax breaks calculate that that those tax braks WOULD pay for themselves. Workers moving to the area...paying property and local taxes....becoming consumers...sales tax.....casuing more businesses to open to service the workers....more employees....more local taxes.....more sales tax .
Whether or not that actually pans out? Who knows - but that's the calculus.
The facts of life are conservatives

I had a coworker who left to work for Amazon. The stock options are mindblowing. I was hoping to get some of that. Thanks NY Democrats.

We have sensible Democrats here like Cuomo but the extremists hate them.
