Almost two million Americans are collecting unemployment in the highest figures since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of Americans who have been continuously receiving unemployment benefits rose by 38,000 to 1.97 million in late July, according to Labor Department data released Thursday.

This unemployment number hasn’t been this high since November 2021.

The number of new unemployment claims for the week ending August 2 climbed by 7,000 to 226,000. It’s slightly above the 219,000 new claims economists had predicted, but it remains in the healthy range.

The new unemployment numbers come after last Friday’s grim July jobs report sent financial markets spiraling downward, spurring President Donald Trump to fire the head of the agency that tallies the monthly jobs numbers.

This may be the last accurate snapshot of this from the BLS we get. However, the economy is looking more and more bleak.

It won’t matter how much they game the numbers in terms of hiding anything from people. You can’t lie to people about jobs and money they don’t have.

Haven't they been doing that since the 70s? The economy keeps growing and growing, but 16-year-olds no longer blow out their transmissions for the fun of it drag racing, then laugh about it. Funny that.

This will be the next set of numbers that Trump needs manipulated for the midterms. Regardless, the last thing we need is more economic bad news.

No, THEY haven't whoever they is in your post. Why the hell are you talking about the seventies? Republicans really need to stop living in the past that didn't exist even back then.

I can already see the next jobs report, over a million new jobs created, somewhere or other and they are all manufacturing jobs.

Yeah, I got lost trying to relate drag races and transmissions to the current discussion. I don't know what @bythoughts is on about at all.

I was just giving an example of how, back when there was a "middle class", it was affluent. You could destroy a car for a laugh. You could tell your boss to Take This Job And SHOVE It! You could go to college -- while doing NOTHING ELSE (but Party!) You could keep a woman at home to do nothing but clean, iron, and watch the kids - well, that and work on the next one. A lot of ordinary people had a lot of cash to burn back then, and yet, after all these years of "growing" and "growing" the economy, now kids are lucky to ride in a borrowed beater to the second job they're working to pay for tuition at the community college. So people have been eating lies about the economy for a really, really long time, and they will probably swallow the next one too.

Well yeah, that's been a growing problem since Reaganism.

Are you just realizing the middle class has been screwed for the last fifty years? Those with have no problem screwing over those without. Didn't trump and crew just pass a bill taking away food stamps and Medicaid from folks so the wealthy could get another tax cut they don't need? Do you really need more proof than that?

These people complain about what past republicans have done to bring us to this point, like moving manufacturing jobs overseas for cheaper labor so those at the top could have more. This is their way of taking care of the working person they say they are for.

Sad. Whomever correctly reported these numbers needs to get fired and replaced with somebody who will report good numbers about Dysfunctional Donald's reign.

Don't put it past the orange cupcake.

And the kids are living at home until they are 35 or the parents are helping pay their rent/mortgage.

I posted one example before to remind people that Trump would get away with this just like everybody else for the past 50 years. I wasn't supporting Trump - just saying he would get away with it, because his people aren't looking out for their own interests.

(The Democrats aren't really either, you know - they'll proudly hire one lady to pull a $300,000 salary handing out contracts to a couple of big companies to house a handful of homeless people, and Democrat voters never notice the money isn't going to them or even to the homeless people they might become.

Don't be concerned. By next months report we will have record jobs growth, record GDP growth, record employment, and the unemployment rate will have dropped by 1500%. Even black people will be 150% employment. Wait until Trump takes control of the monthly popularity surveys. Then we will be able to truly see that he is the most popular president ever.

Didn't inflation decline and GDP go up this past quarter? Maybe the fed ought to think about freeing up some money with a reduction in the interest rates that are hurting everyone.
