The article is commingling a lot of different products, ex. lumber, paper, recyclables, etc. with their own nuances. Going back to agriculture, I’ve always gotten a chuckle out of the fact that we export rice to China.

Probably because their source handles all of those affected things.

Many farmers borrow money at the beginning of the season and pay off the loan with the proceeds from the sale of the harvest.
China cancelled purchases of the harvest.

Any farmers whose seasons had already begun may be already ****ed

So if you've been selling rice to China for five years, do you plant rice now? Or soybeans, do you plant soybeans again or switch to corn now.
Considering Trump seems to change his tariff 'strategy' like most people change their underwear, how do you decide what to do for your years income?

"Goodness. I really must not partake anymore, you are being far too generous. You are all practically handing me your faces without even my having to ask."

no worries

Trumpco is releasing fresh leopards daily

A decision has to be made, what to plant. What do you make that decision based on?

for some farmers, rice and soybean seasons may have already begun before Liberation Day

Maybe they can go to the bank and get a second new loan for the new equipment, new seeds, and possibly new land, etc. they need to swap crops

it's a triple-shitty situation.

for the short term, I hope he bails them out before the littler guys all go bust
I agree that the small farmer needs help
/sarcasm
maybe Trump would like them to fail so the big farm conglomerates can buy them up. After all he said he plans to make America rich. He just didn't say who will get rich.

Soybean farmers still reeling from Trump’s first trade war. Chinese tariffs on U.S. soybeans at 114%.

Many soybean farmers switching to corn.

Will the last US soybean farmer turn off the lights and lock the door, please?

It’s too early to say what the outcome will be because this is an evolving situation and harvest season is at least 5 months away.

All sorts of things COULD happen.

In the meantime, farmers have to make plans and are unable to "wait and see".

Yes, it's an evolving situation.

As far as harvest, it depends on the crop on when it is harvesting time.

If you were a farmer would you not want to know there is a buyer for your product before you expend money to plant, grow and harvest the crop?

In order to have anything to harvest 5 months from now, farmers must decide what to plant TODAY. Actually several weeks ago because seed just doesn’t magically appear.

In fact, many US soybean farmers are switching from planting soybeans - due to the retaliatory tariffs imposed by China (US soybean farmers biggest export market) - and planting corn instead.

So no it’s not too early to say.

Just out of curiosity, What is China doing for food if they are boycotting our farmers?
