On my DebatePolitics profile. This is no insult to liberals, it just doesn't feel like me any more. Too much unaffiliated baggage (and this is not the thread to discuss the baggage). I looked through all the options, pondered and thought, and came to the conclusion "other" was the best fit, because "ambivalent" was not an option and no available option seemed to match that as strongly as I needed to. Anyone else, from either party, recently done the same or are considering it?

For example, Independent, libertarian and center leaning are too "liberal/conservative" dyadically thinking for my ambivalence.

For any that might be confused, I mean "liberal" in the American political sense of the word, not in a Canadian or British or any other type of way, because that's what I had been since my political awaking almost 30 years ago. A viable, non-corporatist, non-populist (Among many other things) 3rd party is desperately needed, but alas I fear our house is already too divided.

This also doesn't mean I no longer support any liberal stances or am now a conservative, independent, libertarian, or some flavor of centrist, because that isn't accurate either. Don't go to the list and say "you're actually that" because no I am not. I studied it long and hard.

Hopefully, you now belong to the "vote for the best candidate party"

I understand completely where you are at........
BUT when the time comes to vote, and that is really all we have in trying to change things, you got to pick one.
And by that I mean Democrat or Republican because as much as we might what a viable 3rd party I do not see that happening anytime soon.

I would be if there were any.

I mean, as South Park used to put it (before it too turned to shit), I will still vote for a Turd Sandwich over a Giant Douche.

I’ve never affiliated or belonged to either major party since I first voted way back in 1968 when one had to be 21 to vote. Here in Georgia, one registers to vote, no party registration which I like. On DP, I’ve always been other. No party affiliation or none would be more accurate. Changing to something else other than republican/democrat or conservative/liberal isn’t unusual. If one looks at party affiliation/identification nationwide, independents have risen from 30% of the electorate in 2006 up to 43% today as both major parties have shrunk.

So, welcome to the club of free thinkers who don’t have to listen to or follow the dictates of a political party leaders like some mindless robot.

There may be some freedom involved but hubby is a registered Independent so he cannot vote in Primary elections in TX. Each state has its own rules.

My official Democratic affiliation has been spotty at best. It was strongest 2004-2008, and has been in a nosedive spiral ever since.

I don't think people should pigeon-hole themselves by a label.
I already barely did. Now that once vague label that vaguely represented my ideals is a poisoned apple.

Ok, this gets a little too close to the line of generally insulting political parties or groups, per the rules of the subforum, so I retract it for something a bit less judgmental. I will let the post stand because I don't like censoring myself, but just don't take that post and run with it as an excuse to insult liberals.

As a general rule I refuse to take on either political or religious labels - American culture ruins them by reflexively assigning often faulty generalizations to them.

Well, no offense, but there is ALWAYS a better candidate. I'm not saying any candidate is outstanding, one is always better than the rest, if you are willing to study-up a bit. By not voting for the best candidate, you aid the lesser candidate to win.

I’ve never been close or strongest for either major party. I vote candidates based on what I think of the candidates, basically whether or not I like or dislike them. I have no problem at times voting third party against both major party candidates when I dislike and don’t want neither one in the office they’re running for. I pick and choose based on my likes and dislikes, not on party affiliation.

Third Party voting helps the lesser candidate win....

I have been a card carrying GOP member since 1979....
It is very hard to accept my party nowadays....but no way in hell could i support a Hillary, or a Biden....so i havent voted top of ticket in last 3 presidential elections now
I do vote local, and try to stay abreast of what is transpiring at the state levels

I also have stopped giving money to national campaigns....congress and above
There are very few that i like or support

Most of the thinking above is what got us Trump.

I vote the straight democratic ticket and I'm proud of it. As long as we have a republic there's a chance we can save it. Vote republican, or third party, or don't vote, and we get MAGA.

Third Party voting helps the lesser candidate win....
When I vote third party, the two major party candidates are the lesser candidates. Call them what you will, the lesser of two evils, the least worst candidates, but in my mind both are evil and both are the worst candidates. In cases like these, I refuse to help either major party candidate win. Whichever one wins will do so without my help.

The republicans always assume their candidate is the lesser candidate while the democrats always assume it’s their candidate that is the lesser candidate. Republicans always say voting third party always helps the democrat win while the democrats say voting third party always helps the republican party’s candidate win. The truth is voting third party helps neither nor hurts neither. Voting third party gives me a way to officially register my vote as being against both.
