And here I was thinking this was a simple question. I've slightly edited this for brevity and clarity, but the convo is verbatim:

This I think is how you do it. This is Gemini 2.5 Pro. Not being an expert on hockey I'll leave it to somebody else to cross-check the below.

Me: Teams that have never won the Stanley Cup Championship. Make sure to cross-check results thoroughly and call out any examples where there may be ambiguity or debate about a team's inclusion on the list.

Response:

As of the current NHL season, there are 11 franchises that have never won the Stanley Cup. This list, however, comes with some historical nuances and ongoing changes within the league.

Teams Without a Stanley Cup Victory

Here are the active NHL teams that have yet to hoist the coveted trophy:
  • Buffalo Sabres: Joining the league in 1970, the Sabres have made two trips to the Stanley Cup Final (1975 and 1999) but were unsuccessful in both campaigns.

  • Vancouver Canucks: Also entering the league in 1970, the Canucks have had three opportunities to win the Cup (1982, 1994, and 2011) but fell short each time.

  • San Jose Sharks: Since their inaugural season in 1991, the Sharks have made one appearance in the Stanley Cup Final in 2016, losing to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

  • Florida Panthers: The Panthers joined the NHL in 1993 and have reached the Stanley Cup Final three times, in 1996, 2023, and 2024, but have yet to secure a championship.

  • Nashville Predators: Entering the league in 1998, the Predators' lone Stanley Cup Final appearance was in 2017, where they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

  • Winnipeg Jets: This franchise began as the Atlanta Thrashers in 1999 and has not yet reached the Stanley Cup Final.

  • Minnesota Wild: Founded in 2000, the Wild have not advanced to the Stanley Cup Final.

  • Columbus Blue Jackets: Also established in 2000, the Blue Jackets are another team that has not yet played in a Stanley Cup Final.

  • Seattle Kraken: The league's newest franchise, the Kraken began play in the 2021-22 season and have not yet made a Stanley Cup Final appearance.

  • Utah Hockey Club: The franchise formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes has never reached the Stanley Cup Final. The team relocated to Utah for the 2024-25 season.

Points of Ambiguity and Historical Context

The history of the NHL includes franchise relocations and teams that share names with now-defunct clubs, which can create some confusion.
  • Ottawa Senators: The current Ottawa Senators franchise began play in the 1992-93 season and has not won the Stanley Cup, with their only Final appearance in 2007. However, an original Ottawa Senators team was a founding member of the NHL in 1917 and won the Stanley Cup 11 times before folding in 1934. These two franchises are not considered to be the same entity.

  • Winnipeg Jets: The current Winnipeg Jets franchise was established as the Atlanta Thrashers in 1999 and relocated to Winnipeg in 2011. This team has never won the Stanley Cup. The original Winnipeg Jets joined the NHL in 1979 and never won the Stanley Cup before relocating to become the Phoenix (and later Arizona) Coyotes in 1996.

  • Utah Hockey Club / Arizona Coyotes: The franchise that recently relocated to Utah was originally the Winnipeg Jets. Throughout its history in Winnipeg and Arizona, this franchise has never won the Stanley Cup. The inactive Arizona Coyotes intellectual property is retained by its former owner with the possibility of a future expansion team.

Damn!!! I forgot about Ottawa. Anyway, thanks for the hint.

I just asked it "list all current nhl teams to never win the Stanley Cup. Only consider current incarnations rather than including team names that have been reused." Other than not being up to date on the Arizona to Utah relocation, it got it right. (Joke they like to tell in Edmonton: What's the difference between the Calgary Flames and a bra? A bra has 2 cups.)

  • Buffalo Sabres (joined 1970): never won; reached Finals in 1975 and 1999.
  • Vancouver Canucks (joined 1970): never won; reached Finals in 1982, 1994, and 2011.
  • Ottawa Senators (modern franchise, joined 1992): never won; reached Finals in 2007.
  • San Jose Sharks (joined 1991): never won; reached Finals in 2016.
  • Nashville Predators (joined 1998): never won; reached Finals in 2017.
  • Columbus Blue Jackets (joined 2000): never won; have never reached the Finals.
  • Minnesota Wild (joined 2000): never won; have never reached the Finals.
  • Seattle Kraken (joined 2021): never won; have never reached the Finals.
  • Winnipeg Jets (current incarnation, relocated in 2011 from the Thrashers): never won; have never reached the Finals.
  • Arizona Coyotes (current incarnation of the relocated Phoenix Coyotes; legacy dating back to original Jets franchise): never won; have never reached the Finals.

AIs seem incredibly, incredibly weak on trying to figure out the difference between 2024 and 2025. You ask them for a news article from 2025, or what the price of something was, or how many people were dying weekly of Covid or whatever, they will cheerfully quote you a 2024 figure.

I'm not sure if that's because of news organizations using special, crazy "neighboring rights" to cow the AI or its programmers into passivity, or because news organizations routinely make their old news articles look like they were posted just recently in the hope you click on them by accident. Or because they can't tell time....

At least it wasn't listing teams that has won Stanley Cups. Though if it had I would not be surprised. Also it seems NHL has got a few more teams since I paid any attention last. The team it seems to miss every time is Ottawa, pretty sure they have never won.

@stevecanuck try adding this to your prompt:

“With supporting links, review list vs links for accuracy, if necessary revise list until accurate”

Adding things like this to the prompt will typically cause the llm to prompt itself with intermediate results and review its own answers.

This is because the AI literary has no idea what the difference between 2024 and 2025 is. It just doesn't understand the difference between sources published at different points in time. Some prompting to just go for sources published in 2025 can help, but doesn't always, because the AI doesn't really know what you mean by the year 2025.

The mistake you're making is believing this is a conversation. All you're doing here is using a chat bot as a search engine without doing any of the results filtering yourself. A person who didn't already know the answer could easily make exactly the same errors.

This iteration of the Senators hasn't, but the old vesion did in the 1910's, 20's, and 30's. So technically chat got that right.

I am very aware that I'm "talking" to a bot.
