I got interested in reading John Jake’s’, “North and South.” My wife had the books that make up the trilogy She had one other, “American Dream(s),” that I enjoyed, so I went looking for more of his books. Only the used market had anything. I got two additional Jakes’ books through ABE. They have quite a database. Anyhow, the books I selected were priced at just under $4 each. Free shipping. To me it is a great deal, I just wonder what the motivation of the resellers are. ABE doesn’t actually have the books, they have a network of folks who have these books. I don’t have the necessary attitude to get excited about wrapping a book and taking it off the post office for $4. What am I missing, is there enough volume to make this worthwhile? I know the PO has a low media rate, but still $4?

Perhaps it's a way of getting rid of now-unwanted books. It's been a while since prisons accepted donations of books. Throwing books away seems sacrilegious, so, for a little bit of labor and some trips to the Post Office, "re-homing" can seem like an acceptable alternative.

I agree with the throwing out books. The missus volunteers at the local library and she is always trying to find avenues that avoid disposal.
