The order establishes that "even in the face of interference from the federal government," Chicago police will protect Chicagoans' First Amendment rights.
Johnson's order directs that, if federal law enforcement disrupts lawful protest activity, CPD will collaborate with protest organizers to develop an alternative plan.

Within the past hour, Chicago's Mayor Johnson signed an Executive Order ensuring Chicago Residents' 1st Amendment protections - including the Right to Peaceful Assembly & Protest.

The E.O. appears to have two predominate elements:

1] It orders Chicago Police (CPD) to Protect Chicagoans' 1st Amendment Rights, including from Federal transgressions.

2] If Federal disruption occurs, CPD are ordered to defend the protesters, and assist them in formulating a successful protest plan.

To the second element, it seems Chicago Police will work with the protestors and the protestors' own security apparatus in providing unified joint protection against any transgressions to their Constitutional Rights.

I'd like to think our great nation's forefathers are watching and smiling down upon the good people of Chicago!

You'd think a right expressly guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States would be safe from MAGA. But...

What is the over/under on the first time Trump's gestapo shoots a member of the local constabulary?

It's a weird reality where stuff like this is even required. It's also an "interesting" turn of events where people that complained about their peers and private citizens shunning them for speech are now threatening to the US government to go after people that say things they don't like.

Some may even call that fascists...

I'm just here for the froth.

It is.

But I think "Executive Order ordering Chicago Police to help protestors formulate successful protest plans" didn't have the same ring to it.

The EO seems to be a measure to help prevent rioting while also trying to encourage legal protests.

I suspect Johnson & Pritzker believe they have found a Constitutional matter where they are on firm ground even withstanding Trump's current SCOTUS.

They are in essence, daring Trump to get himself slapped with nationwide precedent, derailing his plans.

I don't think Trump has the guts to do this. There's easier pickings across the nation, rather than have his plans come to a screeching halt in Chicago.

It is.

They don't seem to mind.

I'm just glad they stood up so that other mayors and governors either stand up or get punished by their voters.

People have been way to quick to self moderate because they don't want to force a showdown. It's ended up just allowing Trump to push the boundaries further and further.

Free peaceful public expression is a protected right, as is the right to one's public safety.

Johnson isn't asking Chicago Police to do anything they don't already do. CPD and protest organizers typically work-out joint plans for organized protests. It's a win-win for everyone.

But these protections apply to even spontaneous protests, as long as they are not a public danger.

Why would MAGA attempt to make a case against the F/A?
Can you give us some examples of the above? TIA

I guess I am not understanding why Mayor Johnson would even need to draw up this order. Performative theater? Until it is proved to be necessary that's what order smells like.

Where is his proof that the Trump administration plans to strip the F/A protected rights of those who seek peaceful protest? Of course, the Chicago PD has always had the duty to protect and prioritize peaceful protestors. Nothing precludes cops from doing their jobs, and there is nothing that indicates this even a problem to worry about.

So you think it's all just symbolic?

It sounds to me like a measure to help prevent rioting while also trying to encourage legal protests - but just a guess.

Hard to say much about it given it's not been released.
