What has your country's government done that has made your life better?

They legalized pot. I don't have to choose between begging the government and dealing with the black market to get my medication now.

They cleaned up Ottawa when all those honk honk dummies were trashing it up, albeit not soon enough.

Gas stations have beer and wine now too.
And making a mess of the neighborhoods where those gas stations are.
A Circle K near us now has beer and mixed liquor drinks and the cans are littered all over our neighborhood. Wasn't that way before. So no thanks on that one.

It was the same for a while with the vaping and thc trash. None of them are as bad as the TH trash.

Needles way worse than THC trash, though you might have lost me on what is THC trash. If smoked it's gone, if eaten, it's gone. Where is the trash?

The round containers, the cardboard sliding containers, regular pack containers, plastic jar containers, butts, empty vaping carts. Don't usually see sharps in the neighborhood here, those are downtown.

My experience the opposite, guess depends where you live. WHere I live, people do the weed at home (usually) and since it is NOT sold in corner stores (hence what I was referring to), it is a mess with booze and beer cans that is littering our neighborhood.

It's not even sold in our town. There's lots of litter though, regardless of where it comes from.

What has your country's government done that has made your life better?
Sooo much. There is almost no part of my life that my federal govt has not made better. Even programs that they help fund, that I do not get direct benefit from, provide me with more security, and greater social order because they exist.

I have never needed the 'social safety net anti poverty programs because I grew up middle class and always had a job, but when we keep people fed, keep them in housing, provide them with basic medical care, and a rudamentary education, it contributes to my welfare. When the federal govt provides funding not only for interstate highways but provides grant money for local infrastruture investment, it improves my life. When my federal govt enforces pollution standards, toxic waste disposal, it improves my life. I could go on and on and on.

The biggest difference between most third world countries and us, is that we have less chaos. You have a lot of hungry, desperate people without hope that their conditions will change, the social order and the social contract dissolves.

Made your life better was the question.
And I answered it.
What has the US Government (or local government) done that has improved your life?
Gaining effective control of our southern borders has made my community safer. Must of the cartel and illegal migrant traffic was coming through here. Now perhaps there will be fewer fentanyl deaths .

What has your country's government done that has made your life better?
MEDICARE! I remember the years before this was put in place, when my grandparents had to go without necessary medical treatments and healthcare. And their constant worry about having to pay for what they did get.

Now, if traditional Medicare would include dental and prescription coverage......

Infrastructure so that I and my loved ones and the food, goods, water, power and internet we need can get around easily.
- Building regulations so we can live in safety and comfort
- Food regulations so we can eat safely
- Consumer protections so our goods usually meet minimum standards of quality
- Almost-free public transport currently being trialled in my city

Stability so we and the businesses we use can confidently plan for the future.
- A reasonably-sized defence force and international alliances to deter aggression
- A stable currency and generally decent or at least comprehensible economic policy
- Reasonably well-trained and accountable police and security services
- Emergency services and disaster management/relief

I put those two first, because even many tyrannical and self-absorbed governments manage to do at least some of those functions not too poorly and consequently are often better than having no government at all. But obviously another big one is free and fair elections with preferential voting and not-awful political funding and electoral advertising laws, so the descent into plutocracy, oligarchy and tyranny (while perhaps inevitable at this point) is taking significantly longer than in some other countries.

Healthcare, a still-decent public system supplemented by and competing with a private option keeping costs lower and quality of care higher.

Labour laws, minimum wages and welfare ensuring employment is never a race to the bottom, entrepreneurship is less an exclusively wealthy privilege, and the numbers of poor people dying our streets are relatively low (even if still too high).
- Our National Disability Insurance Scheme which helps those who cannot work

Education so we can have a functioning democracy and capable workforce.
- Endowments for arts and sciences to improve our lives

Collecting taxes, so I can have the pride of contributing to this great country and all that we're doing together.

Lets not forget these folks. https://sentientmedia.org/trump-halts-government-agency-communication/ I don't have concrete proof of diseases neither my loved ones nor I did not acquire, but I have no doubt that they have improved enough lives that its hard to imagine mine has not improved.

If you're including local government, there are many positives. A general and sincere community attitude permeates the city councils and county commissions. A specific event that made my life better was Western Lights in February. It was so awesome I went twice.

This video does a great job capturing the festival.

I'll start with Canada's Liberal government.

Changed the eligibility age for our pension plan from 67 to 65.

Added dental and prescription coverage to our healthcare system.
You sure that 67 to 65 business is an improvement? After all, the result of that decision are increased taxes, and/or reduced benefits. Rings like make 65 & 66 year old's lives better, at a cost to those who are younger. Heck, an argument can be made it makes everyone's life worse.

There was no increase to the CPP payroll contribution.
