I have posted in the poll ten of the most common vices people engage in. If you were told you had to give up one of those vices, which one (yes - one) would you pick. Obviously, when I made one of the choices men/women, that one is aimed at singles and while dating isn't a vice, I threw it in there as one of the options you might choose to give up. Don't take it all so seriously.

Definitely gambling. I rarely gamble anyway. I won't miss the occasional lottery ticket.

If I had to give up one of them, it would easily be women, because I'm past the age where I'm overcome with my desire for them. They will always be attractive - and I'll always have more than my fair share of female friends. But as romantic or sexual partners, they'd be easier to give up than anything else on that list.

Especially coffee.
:coffee:

Easy. Alcohol. Barely drink anyway.

1. Tobacco, in whatever form you enjoy it
Already quite. Could have cared less.
2. Men/women, whether dating or casual pursuits (for the singles on here)
Never stopped and never will, married ot not.
3. Alcohol of any kind
Had to stop, medical.
4. Marijuana
Stopped all drugs when i graduated college. They did not fit in with a career.
5. Gambling
I was never much of a gambler but i enjoyed Atlantic City when it was the only game in town. Craps, no mindless slots.
6. Online activity like debate forums and social media
I am thinking seriously of leaving given the current environment .
7. Collecting "stuff", whether coins or muscle cars, whatever your collection fix is
Tough one
I collect cds and vinyl. Have over 5000
With streaming it is now pointless. I am a person of practicality. I already sold a few cds. Rare hard to get ones that i have another copy of. Why people pay me 1000 for a cd i don't understand but they do. Most are worthless of course.
8. Coffee and any related beverage (iced caps as example)
I gave up coffee for health reasons. Hardest thing i ever gave up. Harder than hard drugs or alcohol.
9. Junk food, snacks, fast food
I eat this crap. I hate myself for it

10. Politics (well, if you obsess over politics, it could be considered a vice, right?)
As i said, given the current climate posting is likely dangerous
I will only keep posting on my audio and music forums.

With all respect how old are you?
I cannot phantom such a time and i am likely as old or close to you.

Ok, but...................................................... which one would you give up?

You only copied part of my response. I qualified it.
I'm 71.
I have to agree with noonereal, I can't imagine giving up women, ever. That is not a knock against your choice, I am just saying for myself.

Tabacco, alcohol, marijuana, since those present the largest risk factors. I don't do tobacco in any form, and I rarely drink so I'm good with the rest. Firm believer in moderation as a rule and in avoiding things you know are bad for you if you abuse them. Smoking is abusive in and of itself. Studies show drinking and marijuana to be the same, abusive.

What about gambling?

Some of these aren't vices I have, so I guess those are automatically out. I never really got into tobacco or marijuana. I date or drink alcohol occasionally, but not that much (and don't really consider them vices in moderation).

Gambling...I do love Texas Hold'em, but I'm very good at it and I don't play compulsively, so I don't really consider it a vice for me.

Collecting stuff...I used to be into collecting MTG cards, but that's an expensive hobby. I sold off most of my cards that were worth much money. It was definitely a vice for me in the past, but I'm already over it.

Coffee/caffeine...this is a vice I have struggled with, but over the past couple months I've managed to successfully cut my caffeine intake back to a single coffee per day. I feel a lot better and sleep a lot better. I *think* I'm over this vice, at least for now, but I'm not confident it will never rear its ugly head again. So maybe this one.

Junk food goes into the same category as coffee. I'm *mostly* over this vice but still get tempted frequently. This is a possibility as well.

Politics...yes, it's definitely a vice to obsess over politics. In the upcoming months I'm going to make a conscious effort to not follow the news as much. I think I could deliberately tune out all the news for the next year and still be better informed than 80% of the public, just through encountering the news without even trying. It's probably not my *biggest* vice though.

For me, I think the winner is: online activity like debate forums and social media. Wasting time on distracting websites is probably my biggest vice. It's a huge source of procrastination and stress, and I don't even really enjoy it that much. It's just something to do when I'm bored. This is probably the vice on your list that I would choose to give up, although there are some other good options!

Great line from WC Fields, while sitting at a card table.

Onlooker asks: Is this a game of chance?

WC: Not the way I play it...nooo...

I fail to see what I quoted needed to be qualified?

I am your age. I would never never consider giving up seeing, pursuing attractive women. Most don't want to date an older man but there are those that will. For me, they MUST be attentive. No one over weight, not even an ounce. All must know how to dress an act.

I can give them them all up - I'm not attached to any

what would be the hardest ? companionship - we're not designed to be alone IMO

Does it count if we dont do it already?

Not sure how that would work.
How could you use your critical thinking by just bumping into misc. media?

A new study reviewed in the Atlantic recently challenge this long held belief in academia.

I know it has validity as I am certainly not one who enjoys social interactions.

Good for you!

Coffee. Since I can no longer handle caffiene, I could do without it all together.

Of the ones I indulge in? None, why?
