Is it safe and healthy to drink a glass of red wine a day? How much is too much?
As long as you just have one.

How about seven glasses a week...all in one day?
Is there any real clinical evidence for it, and if so, is it any more beneficial than grape juice would be?

Sardinians live a very long time. Sardinians drink a lot of red wine. Good enough for me.
Damn! Are you saying they have store bought red wine up there around Chester now?
That's my point! People who follow the Mediterranean Diet statistically live longer and healthier lives.
I'm just nervous about drinking alcohol everyday.. I mean it's not like I get drunk, but still..
Is it too much? Does it actually keep people healthier?
I guess it depends on who you ask.
My family is from Sicily and drinking red wine is part of our cultural heritage. Growing up we kids were routinely given red wine, mixed with water, with our Sunday dinner, which was inevitably some kind of pasta and meat.
Without boring you with details a few years ago I went for a routine medical exam that turned up an odd EKG reading - it was the first EKG I had ever had. Long story short it turns I have something called a Right Bundle Branch Block which in plain English means it takes longer than it should for the electrical signals to traverse one side of the heart so the heart contracts out of sync. It can indicate heart damage or it can be completely benign. In my case the doctor concluded it's caused by thickened heart muscle because I was an athlete in my younger days - I played football and was a competition weightlifter - and still lift today. To get to that conclusion I saw two cardiologists had a ton of tests and still routinely see a cardiology NP once a year as part of my annual physical.
When they ask they typical "lifestyle" questions I always answer the same way. A glass of red wine every day, scotch or bourbon on Sunday and a cigar or two a week (not inhaled). No one has ever complained about those and one of the cardiologists actually did say the wine was good for me. When I saw the NP a couple of weeks ago what she did complain about is the amount of coffee I drink - 3 to 4 cups a day. Not a peep about the alcohol or the stogies.
