The Trump administration, as it slashed federal programs in a slapdash manner, drastically cut the budget of the National Weather Service. Newspapers warned that these cuts were already having the effect of making some local weather forecasts impossible because stations had to close down or could no longer afford weather balloons. There was talk of whether the United States would be able to prepare the public adequately and in time for hurricanes given the cuts in staffing. Yesterday a meteorologist, who happened to have gained fame by becoming emotional on the air while broadcasting during Hurricane Milton, spoke to this point.

"A meteorologist who has spent his career warning South Florida about hurricanes had a new warning for viewers last week: He’s not sure he can do it this year.

John Morales of WTVJ in Miami said the Trump administration’s recent cuts to the National Weather Service could leave television forecasters like him 'flying blind' this hurricane season. 'We may not exactly know how strong a hurricane is before it reaches the coastline,' he warned."
