The vessel, named HMNZS Manawanui, ran aground on Saturday evening, according to New Zealand's Defence Force (NZDF).
All 75 crew and passengers were evacuated at around 7:52 p.m. local time on Saturday.
The ship was conducting a hydrographic survey off the coast of the island of Upolu when the incident occurred.
Speaking at a press conference in Auckland, Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Garin Golding said four liferafts and two small inflatable boats were used to evacuate passengers.

I am glad no one was hurt or lost, and I hope the ecological damage can be contained; however, a vessel dedicated to Hydrographic survey (undersea mapping) running aground is going to raise more than a few eyebrows.

Whoops.

Agree that it seems weird that a boat that’s supposed to be effectively mapping the ground runs aground…like what?

They had a complete loss of power and hit a reef before manual control could be established.

It was a 24 year old vessel (purchased by NZ in 2018) with multiple upgrades. Shit goes wrong.

In May the frigate Te Haha was also damaged while birthing in Port. You would expect a thorough top-down assessment to be made of these incidents, but that is most likely not going to happen.

In the latest news: the Chief of the NZ Navy has announced that human error was the cause of the accident, not a loss of power. The three officers on the bridge failed to follow "muscle memory" and see that the ship was still on auto pilot at the time of the incident. The next step in the investigation is a disciplinary process for the three officers on the bridge; the officer controlling the vessel, the officer supervising that officer, and the commanding officer of the ship.
