2000 jobs at Johns Hopkins cut

As long as it pays for tax cuts for the rich and boosts corporate profits, I don't care!

It is a set back to society. It has take man uncounted years to get to a level of knowledge that we have.
And these worthless mentally impaired people only care about their wealth.
And yes, Trump and Musk are some very very very sick people.

Johns Hopkins to Cut More Than 2,000 Workers Funded by Federal Aid

The university, a leader in scientific research, has been hard hit by the Trump administration’s cuts, which will slash at least $800 million from its budget.

Johns Hopkins University, one of the country’s leading centers of scientific research, said on Thursday that it would eliminate more than 2,000 workers in the United States and abroad because of the Trump administration’s steep cuts, primarily to international aid programs.

The layoffs, the most in the university’s history, will involve 247 domestic workers for the university, which is based in Baltimore, and an affiliated center. Another 1,975 positions will be cut in 44 countries. They affect the university’s Bloomberg School of Public Health, its medical school and an affiliated nonprofit, Jhpiego.

Nearly half the school’s total revenue last year came from federally funded research, including $800 million from the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Johns Hopkins is one of the top university recipients of the funding that the administration is aiming to slash. And it appears to be among the most deeply affected of the major research institutions that are reeling from cuts — or the threat of cuts — to federal money that they depend on for research studies and running labs....

Cutting-edge research brings here the best and the brightest. Musk-trump-vance appears intent on driving away international students and researchers - as well as our own.

Congratulations, voters who did not select Harris last November. You have empowered people who are busy making the USA into one of trump's "shithole" countries.

Yep. I'm really trying to avoid permanent hate, though. It's difficult. I have lost my job due to funding issues multiple times, and those were hard times. I ended up shifting away from grant funded jobs, but I still feel for those who are seeing their PI come to their cube to tell them that they're suddenly ****ed. Between that and those who rejoice over the DOE getting gutted, it's hard to resist saying **** you forever. At this point, I just don't waste time on them. They aren't worth any more time or effort than I want to give them. The people like this IRL are the most difficult, especially if I have known them a long time. I want to reason with them and tell them what they don't understand, but no. I'm not doing that, either. They need to keep that shit out of my house or they won't be back.

Trump is squandering the accumulated knowledge, talent, and assets in this country. Almost as if he wants to bring on a mini-Dark Ages here in the USA.

The red hats understand none of this.

Behind a pay wall. Why are they letting people go? Drop in grant money? Does this affect research work, or patient services?
There's a copied-and-pasted excerpt of the first paragraphs in Post #6.

Pay for the service and learn.
No fee for extreme right wing radio, right ?

In a statement on Thursday calling it a “difficult day,” Johns Hopkins said it was “immensely proud” of its work on the projects, which included efforts to “care for mothers and infants, fight disease, provide clean drinking water and advance countless other critical, lifesaving efforts around the world.”...

Of the school’s total operating revenue in 2023, $3.8 billion, or nearly half, came federally funded research. About $800 million comes from the U.S. Agency for International Development, which the Trump administration is in the process of dismantling.

The Trump administration has said that it wants to make the government leaner and more efficient by, among other measures, dramatically cutting financial support for the program, which promotes public health and food security in low-income countries.

In ordering cutbacks in the agency, which amount to a 90 percent reduction in its operations, President Trump said that it was run by “radical left lunatics” and that is was riddled with “tremendous fraud.”...

Not that trump or musk has provided proof that USAID programs are "riddled with 'tremendous fraud'".

Gutting research and aid programs for the sake of doing so....the height of stupidity.

Another undesirable side effect of cutting aid to universities, especially funds for advanced research: fewer international students will pay full fees to attend American graduate programs, which, of course, will undermine the financial stability - even the viability - of these upper-level studies/degree programs/schools.

27 people associated with Johns Hopkins have won Nobel Prizes. This is a terrible waste of talent.

Firing some of the world's great researchers while putting a nutcase like RFK Jr in charge of HHS are big steps backwards if the intention is to make America healthier.

I see trump's installing RFK jr at HHS as a big "**** you" directed at Americans.

Perhaps, in part, as payback for Americans' having spurned him in 2020....but his reason for undermining the health and welfare of all of us doesn't really matter. What does matter: the fact the malignant narcissist trump seems to be waging war against the people in the USA.

...Critics of the decision, however, have said the cuts are ushering in a new era of isolationism that could prove to be dangerous. Sunil Solomon, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins, said the cuts would lead to a resurgence in the spread of H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS.

“What true great nations do is help other nations, but now, it seems, we’re America first,” Dr. Solomon said.

The administration has also sought to reduce the amount of money that the National Institutes of Health sends to university for research, cuts that have been blocked for now in the courts. If they go into effect, those cuts would reduce federal payments to Johns Hopkins by more than $100 million a year, according to an analysis of university figures.

The university, which receives about $1 billion a year in N.I.H. funding and is currently running 600 clinical trials, is one of the plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit challenging those cuts....

This is how recessions start --- the snowball effect. A layoff begets a layoff begets a downtick in consumer confidence which begets more layoffs.

Nothing worse, economically, than heading into a recession when you are already running huge deficits as its deficit spending that gets you out of a recession.

We were told to expect either a recession or depression with Trump at the helm. Even I did not think he could create a recession in just a few short weeks. I do hope that we are not headed for depression.

The United States Agency for International Development exists to spend money allocated to the President by Congress to meet objectives in foreign countries. Paying for half the operating budget of a private domestic university isn’t that. And it’s as simple as that.

You're not in a position to make that decision.

Neither, apparently, is musk or his teenage stooges.

Of course I am. If you disagree then you’re free to cite the legislation passed by Congress which says otherwise. But I suspect your hair is on fire because you don’t know what you’re talking about. Johns Hopkins receives $1 billion annually in grants from the NIH for medical research. That isn’t going anywhere. What’s happened is that someone with a brain has decided that monies allocated by Congress for foreign assistance shouldn’t be spent on private domestic universities and domestic pet projects.

If you want money to do whatever it is you’re doing there are 400+ federal agencies you can apply for a grant from. But you’re no longer going to get foreign assistance money for domestic work.

Nothing justifies hatred. Hatred will eat a person alive. It is best avoided.

When a life is ruined by hatred, then hatred has won; and the hater has lost.
