It appears among many of his other qualities the Dark Lord of Russland is something of a philosopher. :) Or the fact that the Dark Lord is on a pilgrimage to the remote Transfiguration Monastery on the island of Valaam on Lake Ladoga brought the Buddha out of the Dark Lord. He had in tow with him on this pilgrimage Darth Lukashenko where both attended an Orthodox mass at the Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God!

So what caused the Dark Lord to wax philosophical on disappointments?

It has to do with the storm blowing his way from Washington DC from his good friend Donald Trump.:) His good friend appears to be very frustrated with him and has announced to all his disappointment in the Dark Lord of Russland. This in itself is an interesting and fascinating development. With Trump it is the case that it is others who get disappointed in him. Trump never wastes time with anyone to the point that it is he the Don that gets disappointed first. Trump is quick on the draw. It is always the other that is left disappointed. It says something that, totally out of character, it is the Don left disappointed. :)

But is Dark Lord Putin at fault for this storm? Or is the Don a victim of excessive expectations?

I have to side with Darth Putin. The Dark Lord has been clear to all, as far back as Senile Joe, that, having latched unto Zelensky, he will not let go until it is guaranteed that the west divorces Ukraine in perpetuity. Donald Trump claims his conversations with the Dark Lord left him with the understanding that they had a deal. Problem is Trump never gave any details. It would have been a miracle given the gap between the Ukrainian and Russian positions

I don't know how anyone from a democratic country could support a tyrant like putin.

attachment is considered a primary cause of suffering. There are many attachments mental and physical, but the common theme is "grasping"
Grasping means you are not rational in that you know you have to let the situation go. not "grasping" to something no longer your control
Since you can't get- it goes from frustration to anger, to lament and other unwise emotions

Trump is still grasping at his role of deal maker for the Ukraine war. Even though it was never his war to end -other then to offer to mediate.
He has now degraded US/Russian relations to talk of nukes and re-positioning.. Trump is irrational blaming Putin not so much for continuing the war (Russia prime directive) but for not doing Trump's command

Trump is throwing away any chance for re-alignment (virtually all U.S. presidents do so) and now finds himself in a quandry whether he should sanction Turkey and China for Russian energy purchases
And I fear "foreign entanglement" which does nothing for the USA except tie us down over basically an internecine war to our disadvantage

Trump is increasingly irrational. It didnt seem to be like this in his first term. As a candidate last year he saw the situation with great clarity and articulated a policy which was simple and direct: its not America's war, let the Europeans pay for it if it is their wish to continue it.

Now if in office he has decided that it is America's war, fine, then let him says so and make his case. The constant he articulates is people are dying, and he does not like it! That's an interventionist policy; but is he aware that he is embracing a world policeman policy?

And how is he going to pivot to China if he gets sucked further into the Ukraine quagmire?

He must be disappointed in his invasion of Ukraine, which they thought would fall in days.

agreed. either he's not thinking what's he's doing thru, or he's just ego driven about making a deal to stop the war.
I dont think there is any deal to be had. Both leaders still think pressing on with the war can be to their advantage

thats exactly what it is MISSION CREEP, and that happens when you stop using critical thought and just go with the flow
In fact Trump is prolonging the war by arming up Ukraine..then we got the peace (entanglements) to be concerned with.
I've said it a million times but the only good US/Ukraine policy is what you mentioned. Let Europe handle it all
And how is he going to pivot to China if he gets sucked further into the Ukraine quagmire?
I dont know if one follows the other, but anything we give to Ukraine. (treasure/weapons) is less we have for Taiwan and checking China

His whole thinking is getting increasingly erratic. As you point out, at this moment both Russia and Ukraine/Eu believe they have more to gain by fighting than standing down; if that is the case there is nothing Trump can do.

What is worse is that many have noticed he is very prickly and susceptible to taunts and praises. You can hear the subtle taunts coming from Kyiv and other western capitals: we have to show Trump Putin does not respect him, what will it take for Trump to realise Putin is stringing him along... And he falls for it! Twitter has become real for him in a way that is dangerous. Increasingly he cannot tell what is real and what is useless chatter. The spat between him and Medvedev is useless chatter. He shouldnt have engaged in it in the first place.

Why did he have to frame his proposed sanctions as an ultimatum? He could have just gone ahead with it and let it end where it ends. No he boxes himself in with an ultimatum. Now he is compelled to act come August 8th. And if it fails to collapse Russia then the inevitable taunts from Zelensky and Europeans will rain down on him.

Exactly

It is painfully obvious that Putin does not respect Donald Trump or fear his threats.

How many years has it taken for this truism to penetrate Trump's skull?

And yet, the odds remain 50/50 that Trump will TACO at the appointed hour.
