    We Should All Be Dead!

Yep. According to my brother, most of our family should be dead since many didn't get the vax (although we ALL, including those vaxxed, um, got it!). Best thing my sister said (and she's not necessarily known for prophetic words) is....we don't know what we don't know. Hind sight might have...

Question for Americans about the meaning of a word / term

I never heard it in the northern portions of the former West/East Germany but it's all over Southern Germany. Could've changed though. I kinda attribute it to the protestant/Catholic divide.

Question for Americans about the meaning of a word / term

We used 'cutting' [class]. But that now has a very different (and sad) definition. The current one our teenagers use is dip. No clue on origins. My gen used that one for an utterly awful form of tobacco. Yuck!

Supreme Court leans toward ending affirmative action in college admissions

(selected quoting and emphasis mine) So....if Freedle is saying the reason black students do better than white students on certain, ostensibly more difficult, questions is because black students have to "learn the word," wouldn't Latinos also have to "learn the word" if, as you both say...

    Defund the police?

Nope, never said it was. In fact, I mentioned that federal spending is a rather small portion of overall K-12 funding. The Census bureau says the "primary" sources are state AND local funding (at 46.7% and 45.6%, respectively). No, I don't think so. I think....those figures in my earlier post's...

    Defund the police?

Alright. Try mine. Source: https://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/indicator/cmb (National Center for Education Statistics) And the graph clearly states it's in constant dollars and includes capital outlay and debt figures. (not sure I'm doing the graphic link correctly, sorry). Next up, the US...

‘Never seen it this bad’: America faces catastrophic teacher shortage

(emphasis mine) This. Had it in my signature from Day One here on DP. Teachers have an almost impossible task. The ones who do it well and I think there are more of those than not...have my eternal gratitude.

‘Never seen it this bad’: America faces catastrophic teacher shortage

(Part 2 of 2) So now let’s look at what percentage each of those localities “spends” towards education. It’s a bit harder to come up with equivalent statistics but I tried to keep them similar. City of Richmond See page 608 $181M from City (of $744M ~25%) $85M from City (Debt Service, p...

‘Never seen it this bad’: America faces catastrophic teacher shortage

(Part 1 of 2, I think, hard budget numbers to follow) Two can play that numbers game. Indeed, the Federal government does not contribute anywhere near the bulk of funding for local schools, at least not here in Virginia. But that doesn’t mean “we” as Americans aren’t spending on education...

Veterans can now teach in Florida with no degree. School leaders say it 'lowers the bar'

Love it! And exactly why so many vets could make excellent "new" teachers. Thank you for your service to our country....and in our classrooms. Both can be a battleground. s¢

Veterans can now teach in Florida with no degree. School leaders say it 'lowers the bar'

To the actual subject of the thread, I don't really have a problem with Florida's plan. There seem to be some sort of qualifications, the certification itself is provisional.....and the teacher shortage is real and won't go away any time soon. Before you criticize this particular program...

Veterans can now teach in Florida with no degree. School leaders say it 'lowers the bar'

I likewise shake my head at that sad participation rate even in my/our relatively engaged school(s). I'd rather have to complain as I did in/with/for our middle school math teachers who reserved their slots for kids....in trouble. That said, that/those math teachers were the ones who held...

What are you listening to? ver. 15.0

We do. And we are. I have enjoyed listening to her learn, practice, and play....everything from Mary Had A Little Lamb to, well, that song. Thanks!

What are you listening to? ver. 15.0

Starts slow but really picks up. Played by the composer....but our child performed it for recital this year. 😇

What are you listening to? ver. 15.0

Awwww...thank you for the reminder. This is the song our teen just danced a 'slow' one with her date...at home, in our living room....because all they played at Prom was hip hop.
