63 yr old family man detained in Alligator Alcatraz

The term concentration camp is so divisive and I don't think it's accurate. This is a detainment center and occupants are given the opportunity to leave, apparently at DHS expense. They are not there because of their race or ethnic group, they are not political prisoners, and they are not asked...

What has me baffled is that he still can self deport from within detention. He needs to pay his way, but his daughter just raised 6k, so that should be doable. So why isn't he taking that option? The family seems to want him to be released so they can continue to Mexico on their own terms.

Actually the only evidence I've been able to find is his testimony. But others have a similar tale to tell. Also, the poor conditions could be a function of the facility being so new and kinks needing to be worked out.

63 yr old family man detained in Alligator Alcatraz

I think it's relevant to consider that people sent to detention facilities like this have broken a long-standing law by failing to have proper documentation, they likely deliberately put themselves into the line of fire (so to speak), when they did not have to come here in the first place, and...

100%. I have a lot of trouble feeling sympathetic for this family because they put themselves in this position. But we don't have to be dicks about it. A detention camp is one thing, but this place sounds horrible and inhumane. That's not acceptable either. The family could have registered to...

Good catch. I've been piecing together the story from a few reports. The first link covers the RV. https://onlyindade.com/local-news/familys-cross-country-journey-shattered-after-father-detained-in-controversial-florida-facility...

https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/man-being-held-at-alligator-alcatraz-wants-to-self-deport-daughter-says/3658232/ Basically, this guy holding dual citizenship from Argentina and Italy has been living here in the US for the past 10 years. He overstayed his visitor visa. (I think the 10 year...

The Qur'an clearly links 'jihad' with fighting.

I'm not really seeing what I think you want me to see. It seems to me that the word jihad is used to mean a spiritual struggle, or a struggle to maintain an Islamic lifestyle, and the word qatl is used to mean a literal fight or battle. I'm vibing that you're not Muslim, so please correct and...

A tale of two trains: Brightline vs California high speed rail

Ancient as it may be, it's all we got. We're not much of a mass-transit state unless we're talking airline travel, so a high-speed train like Brightline is really nice! I remember early in Obama's presidency where he wanted to give a bunch of states money to build maglev (I think it was...

A tale of two trains: Brightline vs California high speed rail

I took the Brightline just a few months ago. It was fast, clean, easy to use, and affordable. The stations were really clean and modern, too. I was very impressed. It does go fast. We were zipping past busy streets at 110 MPH. One downside to the Brightline that we saw when it first came out is...

    School punishment

This is such a very complex question! I don’t think corporal punishment should be an option for the school system with or without parent consent. But yeah, let’s run with this and imagine a scenario where Little Johnny (age 13), attends a typical middle school in a state that had prohibited CP...

    Hello!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I just read the rules (per your prompting). They all seem pretty sensible, and I'm glad that the forum is moderated well. BP: Well met! Cigarettes without filters are.... no. But life without filters... yeah, sometimes. Sometimes that can be great. :) Grand...

    Hello!

Hello, hello! I haven't been active on a forum for a few years now, but I'd like to get into some intelligent conversations about politics (mostly North American), and current events. I consider myself to be a centrist, but my viewpoint is rarely in the center. I tend to lean slightly right or...
