Once again, a YouTube Source I find of interest bringing up a topic of valid discussion.

This young psychologist (and member of a knitting society, who knew that was political?) has put forward an interesting definition of Critical Race Theory.

I post the video, but will also post the Definition below it for discussion purposes:

Here is her definition:

"1. Critical Race Theory is an Ideology started in academia in the 1970's that says racism exists everywhere - in every person and system - and the job of the critical theorist is to assess HOW (not if) racism occurred in any circumstance. Racism is always ASSUMED to have occurred.

2. Another way to think of critical race theory is this: it's the opposite of what Martin Luther King preached. It is the idea that we should judge people on the basis of their race, that race is the only thing that matters about them, not the content of their character."

She goes on to explain how this is problematic as if one starts with a conclusion that racism has occurred and one work's their way back from that initial conclusion, that is confirmation bias in action. You'll only look for information that supports your conclusion.

Worse, you will dismiss any information that does not conform to your expectations. You will look until you find something that confirms your expectations, and disparage anyone who does not agree/conform with the conclusion.

The poll question is:

Do you agree with this definition, and analysis:

Yes.

No.

Other, explain.

If I recall, that woman is a psychologist who teaches workers to be more subservient to their corporate overlords.

Yup:

Everyone, don't be fooled by the fact she's a psychologist and looks like a butch lesbian. Karlyn Borysenko is a diehard Trumper so we all know her perspective on CRT is going to be far from nuanced.

CRT as best a non-academic like myself understands it - simply looks at all aspects, not just the 'political'. It came in the 70's after the Civil rights movement had 'won' in the voting sphere, but sought to explain why racism remained in other facets of society - economy, education, workplace, etc.

Now as for the myriad ins and outs, I wouldn't have a clue, I'm not a scholar. But big picture: it's a holistic approach rather than the almost entirely legislative agenda of the 60s.

And of course Tucker Carlson's latest favorite rant.

She's very well educated and wants to bring us back together. Interesting that people who know absolutely nothing about Dr. Borisenko, who doesn't see life through the racial lens, are doing their usual divisive Trump schtick.

No one who is a Trump supporter wants to 'bring people together.' MAGA and peace are like oil and water.
a blanket statement like that fails if there exists one person to the contrary. Who do you think will have an easier time proving their position-you or someone who disagrees?

So now you're going to shame her because of the way she looks? I thought you were above objectifying women... I guess not.

Critical Race Theory is the latest right-wing freakout. As usual, righties can never demonstrate the harm caused by their latest target of hate. Instead of admitting that their argument falls flat yet again, they turn up the volume as loud as they can to drown out all rational thought. This is how righties operate now.

They should go back to complaining about Mr. Potato Head; at least there, they could understand what they were upset about.

Please tell me where I shamed her for her looks. Do you think saying someone looks like a butch lesbian is an insult?

You shamed her for her looks. There is no wiggle room there so stop trying to do damage control.

I think it's possible for someone to denounce Trumpism and embrace the idea of bringing people together. But I don't see how it is possible to be a Trump supporter and an advocate for peaceful coexistence at the same time.

There is no need for damage control. Do you think it's an insult to say someone looks like a butch lesbian? Even real butch lesbians would agree she looks like one. There was no insult in the post, just a warning that just because she looks a certain way doesn't mean she fits into the stereotype of a liberal/leftist/feminist.

OK but with 70 Million people who voted for Trump, I bet there is at least one, and that defeats your claim. Do you think the people who voted for Biden are as equally divisive?

Sure, maybe there's one. And that one is likely a very confused individual. ;)

As a whole, the people who voted Biden are nowhere close to as divisive. While no one is perfect, especially Biden himself, liberals/leftists don't as often target specific ethnicities, races, religions, etc as the problem the way Trump supporters do.

I would disagree and recite the Great Moderate-the Late David Broder's comment from over 30 years ago where he noted the goal of the US Left went from transforming the USA into another USSR (after the fall of the wall) to seeking to balkanize the USA into warring ethnic special interest groups. crap like reparations, or affirmative action are both symptoms of that disease

The vast majority of the US left has disdain for the USSR and other totalitarian regimes. I would know, I associate with them and read/watch them regularly. Supporters of the USSR and Stalinism are mocked as 'tankies.'

When it comes to rightwingers, however, well we don't need to look far to see their admiration for totalitarian strongmen. On this site alone, we have right-wingers who are open about their adoration for Franco and Pinochet. Imagine if the left-wingers on this site had avatars of Joseph Stalin or Mao Zedong...

There is simply no comparison between what liberals/leftists advocate (e.g. reparations and affirmative action) and what conservatives have done over the years. For example, conservatives admitted the Drug War was a tool to oppress the black communities.

Reparations and affirmative action are intended to bring equity and make up for past injustices. While I do think those programs are a bit misguided (I think there are better ways to handle equity), they are not malicious in the way conservatives do politics.

I find reparations and affirmative action particularly offensive because they punish people merely based on their race

And then there is the reality based community... I voted as a part of a 40 percent white, 60 percent minority coalition
to remove that fascist blot in the White House last November, a coalition that you have the education to support, but not the soul...

You , unsurprisingly, totally missed his point.

Wrong. She hit the nail on the head. The member was engaging in an ad hominem attack on the source of the video, and made no attempt to engage in a debate on the subject being presented.

THAT was his sole point and effort.

That is also a typical response from your side of the argument. Deflect, diminish, attack, use whatever tool available in the arsenal of moral panic to demonize and by doing so think to win the point.

Critical Theory came out of the Frankfurt School of communist/socialist ideology. It is designed to sow division and dissension in society, to isolate and create battling groups.

CRT is a part of that school of thought, and it creates racism, it does not stop it or address it.

This is the problem I see. This is the problem I oppose.
