(CNBC) McDonald’s reports largest U.S. same-store sales decline since 2020

By itself, this is just one data point, but it aligns with an uptick in jobless claims, a slowdown in GDP growth, a slowdown in port traffic...it's more meaningful in the greater context of things.

McDonald's prices has gone up. They're on the front line for minimum wage price increases. That and kicking out all the illegals shrunk their customer base.
Prices have not increased due minimum wage. More conservative garbage. Not as bad McDonalds stale fries but close...really close.

I had a breakfast sandwich at Mickeys a few months back. The manager was interviewing some applicants a table over. When they left, the manager was still doing some paperwork and I asked her if I could ask her a few questions. She agreed and I inquired what starting pay was these days. She replied that starting pay was $15/hr and $17/hr if the applicant had some experience. That’s gotta factor into menu pricing, IMO.

FWIW, BK has a long-running deal to get "2 for 5" or "3 for 7". allowing you to mix it up among various choices.

One of the choices is a Whopper Jr., so you can get 3 Whopper Jr.s for 7 bucks, which is about the price of 1 hamburger at an indie burger joint.
Whopper Jr is the most consistently tasty burger for the price. I’m old enough to remember when they were on the dollar menu and the franchisees were screaming that they were losing money at that rate. 2025 they are now $2.50. I like a Wendy’s single with cheese every now and then. I’ll eat at McDonald’s when I forget how disappointed I was the last time.

One has to be a regular to learn about all those deals. I suppose they are available, but I have become very proficient in my own kitchen since Covid hit.

The BK deals are usually on large signs in the windows. You'll also see them online.

Worst default is a regular priced Whopper at 5.99, + a buck to make it a Double. So 6.99 for a Double Whopper - which is a reasonable deal - even with respect to the indie competition.

But seriously, this stuff pops right out on the websites, and usually you can put in your zip code, select your closest store, and immediately see the promotions and other prices.

I'm not otherwise a fan of Dominoes Pizza, but they have one specific unique variety I do indeed like. Ordering online using one of their promotions that's been going on - literally - for years, I get two medium pizzas out the door for under 15 bucks! That's less than half the regular price!

If I wasn't getting the promotional price, I probably wouldn't order from Dominoes in any frequency, or perhaps even at all. But at that price, with as much as I like this specific pizza, I'm hitting them up maybe once a month!

There's a unique one-day-a-week chicken wings combo deal that my local Hooters (of all places) runs, and it too has been going-on for years: 10 bucks for a full portion of my choice of wings, + my choice of side (I go with curly-fries or tater-tots), + my choice of dipping sauce (the blue-cheese kicks). The dipping sauces are surprisingly high quality, as are the wings.

The wings are usually 15 bucks, the fries are 6, and the sauce is 2 bucks. I do indeed like the wings and fries, they're good "restaurant "quality". But I'd probably not pay 20+ bucks for them. I've got another place when I want wings at the full going-rate. But at 10 bucks? I can't say 'no'! I hit them up maybe once a month, and never finish the large portion in one setting.

I buy none of the stuff I mentioned in this thread because "it's cheap". I buy these items because, "I like them". But that I can get them relatively cheaply allows me to choose them over other alternatives that might otherwise dissuade me from choosing them. IOW, if these items were more expensive I'd probably use other alternatives.

There's all kinds of stuff like this available for the taking, if you use a modicum of effort & practice due self-control.

These corps put systems in place. Use these systems to your benefit, not theirs. Good consumerism demands it!

Shouldn't compare to the Big Mac. Whoppers are OK but they want more for cheese and the tomato tends to be soggy. Down on 11th and Lee there is a Burger King and a Mickey D's are Kittie corner from each other. Mikey D's is packed compared the Burger King; line goes around the building with cars waiting for their food in holding spaces.... ✌️

Same thing here. Burger King is always empty and there is only one in my city compared to the 4 McDonalds which always have lines. I can't understand how they keep that one open. No business.

I must admit the BK's by me never seem to get very crowded, either. I've got three I use, and there's never more than one or two people in front of me when inside, and often I might be the only person when in the drive-through!

But hey, open 'till midnight with no wait has it's advantages! The local Mickey D's are open 24/7, though. But their late-night drive-throughs can be horrendous.

i reckon McDonalds sales are taking a big hit around the globe, due to the anti America stuff, and mcdonalds supporting Israel along with other American brands, price wise in the UK Burger King meal deals are 50% more expensive than McDonalds, KFC there stuff is really disgusting and there chips/fries are disgusting like eating rubber

You can't see that Culver's is stealing market share? In addition we've had at least 5 new burger chains move in or start up in our market.

I would check sales for the fast food industry. I would think there's a drop in sales over all with consumer confidence down.
Is it weird thst I have no clue what "Culvers" is?

Is it a regional thing?

Well, I have to say, I have no reason to go to a McDonalds. First I have small kids, but since now that they have torn down all the play-places and replaced their formerly bright, white, cheerful interior designs with cold, unwelcoming interiors and boring kiosks, I have no reason to go in. Second, for the level of quality, McDonald's is overpriced. In-N-Out is less expensive and better-quality, and they give your kids stickers and crayons with their meal.

I detested the play areas, even when my kids were of the appropriate age. But you're not alone, as others in the thread have echo'd your complaint.

As to pricing, especially in relation to quality, yeah - I can't argue.

Though if you'll look at my posts upthread, you'll find I use McDonalds on occasion for Big Mac (sandwich only) or for one of their better deals like the current "2 for 5".

So I'm fine with that.

And crazy as it sounds, if the drive through is empty as I'm passing by, I might be good for one of their "two-and-a-half-buck" ice-cream cones, as a snack!

Notice when I asked for hard statistic citation, the poster exited the thread.

I hate to say it. I remember when BK first started out. They believed McDonalds' traffic studies were so good, they simply skipped theirs and put a BK nearby the local McDonalds stores!

So back in their early days when they were doing their expansion up north, wherever you saw a BK there would invariably be a Mickey D's within a block or three. I remember this holding true through maybe the late seventies or even early eighties.

BTW - Min wage is 16-and-change, and my local McDonalds starts a hair higher at 17-19. They do offer tuition reimbursement though, which I think is great. After Covid they were offering a 500 dollar sign-on bonus after x amount of days, but have no idea if that's still in place. I know this through their hiring signs in their windows.

I did a search on their "store finder" using my zip code shortly after I posted.. I got zero results <shrug>
26 states in the middle USA mostly.
Just a little over a thousand stores.

I am pretty much as middle US as one can get.. a tad more 'murica land North of me than South but east versus west axis.. yeah very middle.

26 states, so half of the US.. hope they can grow, but if people have never heard of them, currently they are not the behemoth McDonalds killing entity that you seem to be touting.

I wasn't touting them as a killing entity by themselves. They are one example of many recent fast food start-ups.

Fair enough
I have no skin in this game amd was initially just commenting that I had never heard of them (even when travelling) I eat fast food maybe twice a year.

I do dine out frequently but I avoid chain restaurants - regardless of its price point.

I am fortunate. I live in a location that is - quite unexpectedly - a foodie bonanza with tons of locally owned restaurants and talented chefs to pick and choose from.

We also live in a very diverse food environment. It's been hard for chains to make a long-term go in our area. Which is fine with me.

My town has a Culver’s and a McDonalds. Locals eat at Culver’s and avoid McDonald’s like the plague. If not for the adjacent highway, McDonalds would have few patrons.

If you’ve never been to a Culver’s, give it a shot. Butter burgers with cheese are way better than anything McDonalds has to offer. Make sure to try the Custard of the day.

I have no clue where one is and their website was incapable of giving me a nearby location when I typed my zip code.. so how am I going to give it a shot?
