George Zimmerman's lawyers Wednesday notified prosecutors that their witness list now includes a who's who of the Sanford Police Department's chain of command at the time of Trayvon Martin's death, including the police chief, major crimes captain, sergeant and case detectives.
It is an unusual defense strategy. Police officers typically testify for the state, explaining how they gathered the evidence that that led to charges.
In this case, it suggests that Zimmerman's attorneys believe the testimony of Sanford officers will help – not hurt - their client.

Interesting. Anyone want to offer some conjecture on this?
I often pointed out in the past the unusual nature of this case of the police, even FBI, testifying for the Defense.
Serino's on the list. Hmmm...

Are the police actually testifying "for" someone?
Or are they just testifying?

Clarify any chain of custody issues that might crop up
why would it be any different with the police on the defense team witness list than it when the police are found on the prosecution's witness list?
Too obvious.
It appears O'Mara's strategy is not to fight the charges per se, but to actually work toward a manslaughter charge. He knows he can not win, so he will make it seem like he is putting up a fight. When in reality, manslaughter will be a win for him.
"Sanford police investigated the case for several weeks without making an arrest. Lee and Serino said they were working to gather evidence for a manslaughter charge when they decided to hand the case over to State Attorney Norm Wolfinger."
Like the investigation reports by Serino said, Sanford PD was working on charging Zimmerman with manslaughter. Their investigation at the time clearly supported it.
I believe your speculation is wrong. He could negotiate a manslaughter plea at any time he wanted to. You don't fight for and take risk for what you can get without the risk. I think virtually everyone but GZ-haters recognize this is a manslaughter case and M2 used to allow the jury to "compromise" on manslaughter rather just a yes-or-no verdict.
