Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine is on fire, says mayor of local town

"The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, the largest of its kind in Europe, was on fire early on
Friday after an attack by Russian troops, the mayor of the nearby town of Energodar said in an online post."

This could prove to be disastrous for a wide area. If the fire breaks out this could be 10 time larger than Chernobyl

It is time for NATO to go on high alert and prepare for a hot war with Russia. Yes, it's risky as hell, but we don't have a choice.

If there's any way at all, find back channels, find weakness in the Russian government with any access to Putin, and urge them to remove him from the ranks of the living.

That would seem to be a rather suicidal and counterproductive strategy.

According to someone in the main war thread, the fire isn't near the reactors.
I just heard that for now, it is the Administration building that is on fire.

Unconfirmed part: I heard these reactors are built extremely well. They are supposed to be able to withstand a bomb, and designed to automatically shut-down if trouble is detected.

Other related news:
Ukrainian Government has said that increases in levels of radioactivity have been detected in the area.
(This may be true or it may be the Ukrainian Govt. attempt to stop the fight in the area)

Brilliant strategy, talk about scorched earth…….

But they're still firing on the plant. That's the problem: they're pretty clearly intent on causing ecological damage.

Nah, they just want control of the power grid, which is rational. I just hope everyone is aiming VERY carefully.

It's a reasonably-modern nuclear plant. They're quite resistant to damage.

Definitely not.

There is a reoccurring theme in the Bible whereby when we pass judgement on others, we are passing judgement on ourselves - given that weather systems travel from west to east, the "unintended consequences" of punishing Ukraine may result in Vladimir Putin playing "Russian Roulette" with his own nation's future!

That has to be it. The Russians can't be that stupid.

Is there some part of this invasion that strikes you as them being particularly clever and/or competent!?

There's a difference between just not winning and bombing a nuclear reactor.
Who gains by bombing a reactor?

The biggest problem they're having is that they underestimated the Ukrainian resistance and their equipment is old and badly maintained. This is a higher HQ screw up, not a Soldier screw up.

Seriously? Putin is throwing away his country's economy for a country that refuses to be occupied. That's pretty stupid.
Putin isn't on the ground commanding an artillery battery. And Putin is doing this because he's paranoid.

I tend to view statements about durability of Russian nuclear plants with a jaundiced eye.

You don't think shelling a nuke plant is something a commander might check with the boss about?

Nah, they just want control of the power grid, which is rational. I just hope everyone is aiming VERY and plumbing carefully.

A direct hit on the reactor is unnecessary - just a disruption of power and plumbing removes the ability to regulate it's operation!

No power - no instruments - no pumps - no water - no method to cool the reactor's core!
