Young voters vent frustration to Obama in MTV forum | McClatchy

If Democrats are counting on young and minority voters to keep them in power in next month's elections, the under-30 audience at a nationally televised youth forum Thursday showed President Barack Obama that they're feeling dissatisfied, too.

Over the course of the hour-long event hosted by Viacom networks MTV, BET and CMT, Obama took one critical question after another from among the 225 young men and women in the studio audience and thousands more sending their thoughts via Twitter.

A young Republican woman from Austin, Texas, in the audience, kicked things off, saying she had "very much respected" his pledge in his 2008 campaign for more bipartisanship but "to be frank, when all was said and done, I don't think that actually happened." A young man from Mississippi thought Obama was too soft on illegal immigration.

A young man from Washington said despite the bailouts and stimulus, unemployment's still above 9 percent and college graduates can't find work.

"Why should we still support you going forward with your monetary and economic policies, and if the economy does not improve over the next two years, why should we vote you back in?"

Viewers were asked to send in via Twitter their greatest hopes or fears. Two messages were read aloud to the president: "My greatest fear is that we are turning into a Communist country" and "My greatest fear is that Obama will be re-elected."

One woman quizzed Obama on why he hadn't yet ended the "don't ask, don't tell" policy banning openly gay Americans from military service. Her question came on the same day the Obama administration appealed a federal judge's ruling that the military must stop enforcing the 17-year-old policy.

1. The young audience, all under 30, 1/2 kids of color, according to Politico's account, remained "defiantly grave."

2. The handlers had hoped to hear some "lighter questions" from the catechumens, considering the venal venue which, being NOT a political event, did not require the offering of equal time to the opp's, explained MTV.

3. Tuff questions came concerning the genocide in Sudan, immigration, domestic violence, green cards and "bad schools."

4. The "most heated exchange" occured when young Professor Bridget Todd from historically black Howard in DC questioned Obama's "alleged commitment" to gay rights just hours after the perplexed president's DOJ filed its appeal of the CA circuit's ruling on DADT.

5. Obnoxious Obama was "clearly agitated," paints Politico.

6. The audience "got under his skin a couple times," mentions McClatchy.

7. Asked if sexual identity was a matter of choice, the put upon president responded that people were born with a certain makeup.

8. Hours earlier his SENIOR ADVISER said gay orientation was a "lifestyle choice."

9. After the morgue which was MTV, Gibbs was peppered about the pervasive pissiness.

10. He blamed the bitchiness on bad economic times.

11. But "few of the questions were about the economy," Politico points out, "most were about social issues or politics."

12. Lame.

13. One of the earlier askers, a grad student from Johns Hopkins, expressed "disappointment the president hadn’t ushered in a post-racial era as some of his supporters had once suggested he would."

14. “When you’re out of work and you can’t buy a home or you lost your home and you can’t pay your bills… sometimes that organizes [people] around kind of a tribal attitude and issues of race become more prominent,” responded the nonplussed prez.

15. Ok.

16. Get out there, young people, he urged, be "the messengers to your less enlightened elders."

17. Who?

18. Because if the president can't go on MTV...

19. He goes TO DELAWARE!

20. LOL!

21. With affable, gaffe-able, laughable Joe Biden in tow the noxious Obama went to work a whammy on the witch.

22. Ie, he CAN'T go to Pennsylvania.

23. After oblivious Obama appeared in African American East Germantown Sunday, TEA PARTIER Pat Toomey jumped out to his biggest lead in 6 months.

24. A totaller of TEA in the KEYSTONE STATE!

25. That's SEA CHANGE, baby!

26. But then how can Admiral Sestak stand aside the clueless chief exec whom the admiral alleges tried to BRIBE him out of his contest versus Benedict Arlen.

27. Remember the OBAMA ORGANIZED townhall in Georgetown, Monday morning, September 20, aired live on CNBC?

28. "I'm exhausted of defending you," became the ubiquitous sound bite, but the focus on the now famous CFO obscured a roomful of doubt, an arena of resentment.

29. "I'm deeply disappointed, I've been told I had voted for a man who would affect meaningful change for the middle class and quite frankly I'm not seeing it, is this my new reality?"

30. Could it be that your elite education, personal management style and racial heritage make it so that you "get it" intellectually without really feeling what Americans are going thru?

31. You said recently your opponents talk about you like dogs yet you talk about the business community like THEY'RE dogs, are you villifying business?

32. Is work for profit morally inferior to the kind of work you did as a community organizer?

33. I took those student loans, I can't pay the interest, there are no jobs, is the American dream dead for me?

34. You were right to reinvest in small business, it was necessary, you saved the auto industry and might turn a profit, the challenge is the public is fearful and negative, the public just doesn't get it, how can you win back the center, you're losing the war of sound bites.

34. I was inspired by your message but the inspiration is dying.

35. Would any investor invest in any concern that has to borrow 42 cents on the dollar, how long can we continue without hurting the longterm health of the economy?

36. When you say, "buck up," are you preparing us for lower social security and medicare benefits in the future?

37. What will you do if tea candidates get elected?

38. To employ a 50K law clerk in NYC it costs me 90K and she walks home with 35, when will you stop whacking Wall Street like a pinata?

39. There's clearly something big going on here---and it sure aint SPIN.

40. One would have to be as blind as that first monkey not to see.

41. Obama's generic approval among YOUTH, according to an AP poll associated with the MTV event, has fallen TWENTY SEVEN PERCENT since May, 09.

42. Poll after poll for about 2 months has shown similar declines amongst Hispanics, women, the working class, independents.

43. In the 12 closest house districts in the country, all the way from Virginia to Hawaii, according to The Hill two weeks ago, undecideds favor REPEAL of Obamacare, 49 to 27.

44. How do you think THEY, the only open parameter, are gonna vote?

45. No wonder the most serious Obamite supporters are so quiet these days.

46. They have at least SOME sense.

47. Obama's answer to CNBC host John Harwood's first question in Georgetown (didn't the bigwigs mostly benefit from the bailouts): we inherited this, we took emergency steps, we avoided a Depression, our programs worked, we stabilized the markets, 8 months of private sector job growth, when you're in a hole so deep the first thing is to stop digging, folks are hurting, many in the audience are hurting, we must continue to go in a postiive direciton, we can't go in a negative direction, we cut capital gains, we helped small biz, we're doing R&D, we eased student loans, growth is slow and steady, there's no quick fix, it took us 10 years to get here, the WSJ reports that real income declined 5% between 2001 and 2009, it's gonna take more time.

48. Harwood: "Now, I've heard you give that turnaround message you just gave many times."

I choose to look at this positively that for the most part students (and the younger generation in general) is actively participating in our countries debates. It's healthy for the country no matter who is in power to always question authority as long as it's within reason. That having been said, it's still a bit disheartening to see the two twitter quotes stated. Over the top statements such as this do nobody any good and if nothing else just prove hyperpartisanship and a lack of understanding the true issues. Just proves that there are idiots in all generations.

I truly believe that this nation can, has and will survive worse than what Obama (or Bush, Clinton, Bush...) is was and ever will be. I voted for Obama, and if given the chance, would ask him the similar questions as to why he hasn't fulfilled some of his promises as well. Don't you think it would be a bit of a waste of time for the students to go there and kiss his ass instead of getting right to the issues?

As far as all the politico statements, etc....well that's just journalists being journalists. Putting a spin on everything. I suggest we all take a step back and try to figure out things for ourselves instead of depending on what MSM (on either side) has to say

stepping back and thinking for themselves is exactly what all those querulous questioners were doing

you know, the ones who asked, are you villifying business, is the profit motive inferior, is the american dream dead, is this my new reality, why did peter orszag come out for extension of the bush cuts to ALL, why are you losing the war of soundbites, are you preparing us for social security and medicare cuts...

that's what independent thought looks and sounds like

thinking for ourselves, it's pretty hard not to see that obama has really messed himself up

Clearly you either didn't read my whole post or just blatantly chose to disregard what I said. I applauded those willing to question authority, regardless of political lean. I also stated that I, given the opportunity would ask some of the same questions. This part of the post was to prove that one can support some things a leader does, while being disappointed in others. I also pointed out that amongst these good and valid questions, that I do, however find it disheartening to see some idiots still making pointless statements such as the two pointed out in the selected text above.

Long story short, questioning the government, good...mindless hyper-partisanship, bad
Any questions?

I'm absolutely repeating myself, as it seems you're a bit slow on the uptake.
I agree, as a person, especially in the political spectrum, I am a speck. As are you.
I however have a problem with your arrogance and hyper-partisanship to the point where you avidly disagree with someone making basically the same point.
You seem to think that these individuals do matter in the grand scheme of things, simply because they agree with what you believe. I come along and say I agree that government should be questioned, but because I happen to fall on the other side of the spectrum (actually much closer to center than your extreme right) I "don't matter"
Why do you not in kind say "few care about these students?"
The only difference is that they have voiced there concerns in an an area where media happens to be present.

Be careful, your hypocrisy is showing...

Young people are asking hard questions, thinking critically, and criticizing the president on real issues!

Yahoo! There is hope for this nation after all!

Someone get's it! Hallejulah!

Yea this Nation can survive if Obama is stopped and only if Obama is stopped. He is on a mission to destroy this Country and he is so damn arrogant that he is getting bolder as his former disciples run for cover and put distance between themselves and his Radical agenda of Marxist based Anti-America policies.

I spent many hours of yesterday talking with a 21 year old young man who is not well versed in Socialism/Marxism and who had no idea what Black Liberation Theology was all about or that Obama was a devote follower of it through his Church and from his mentor Rev.Wright.

This young man did know about the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Values those Documents were founded to represent. I know because we discussed this all at length.

I will also tell you something else he knew. He doesn't dislike Obama he hates him.

It took me some time to convince him that it's not the man who should be the focus of anger and outrage but the policies, actions and lies, are where hate should come to reside.

We talked about his fear of a possible coming Revolution and he wondered if the Military would side with the people or Obama

I assured him the only Revolution we face is On Nov. 2nd and the out come is up to us.

This was hard to deal with because at his age many of his friends who were unable to find meaningful jobs joined the Marines and Army for the College Benefits and the immediate money that comes.

He has a number of these friends, and he tells me that to a man they all hate Obama and the feeling is widespread within both the Army and Marine units these 5 young men are in from Camp Pendleton CA, to Parris Island, SC, to Ft Bragg, NC, West Point and Fort Shafter, in Hawaii.

These young men I was told were together in school apparently since the 5th grade and keep in touch weekly through Internet.

I would say this too because I asked if this anger was over who Obama is and didn't get to finish my question when i was interrupted I was told in no uncertain terms that if I was about to refer to race I was way off base because of all of the 6 young people one was Black, two were Hispanic, one was half Filipino, the other two white.

Non of them ever liked Obama because they found out early that he was too inexperienced for the job. Apparently not one of them liked McCain either, but this young man said they all liked Sarah Palin.

Gee I wonder why?

Any way I would have loved to have this young man and a couple of his pals on my old Radio Show. It would have been very informative at least for me.

As it is I was surprised as this young man Harmon that there are this many Conservatives in a group of 6 young men all about 21 and 22. He again corrected me, saying when they all turned 18 they all registered as Independents.

So this all tells me there is hope and there are more than just us old guys out here who see Obama for what he really in and not who the propaganda tells people he is.

How many times has this or that side touted their younger supporters, only to discover that they turn out to be less likely to vote?

I heard the same **** when Bush was in office. "I feel like we will only survive as a country if and when he is out of power," "I wouldn't be surprised if he overturned term limits to stay in the White House" are just two of many hyperbolic statements I remember hearing over the last 8 years (no it wasn't on the forums, and no I can't give a source other than fairly clear memory)
My point is, with every president, especially as of late, the world seems to be coming to an end. It happened with Bush, Clinton, W Bush, Obama and I'm sure whoever comes next will fall under the same rediculous scruitinty. As I said, I do take issue with many of the same things as you I'm sure. I however take a bigger issue with extreme hatred towards those with opposing views. I feel this way now, the same as I did when Bush was in power. You say yourself that these young people you were talking to were uninformed but afraid, and that is what I take issue with. Way too many people in this country just have no civic education and depend on mainstream media talking heads to tell them what to believe and what to be afraid of. I'm not saying that one should trust a government in everything they do, in fact I believe quite the opposite.

As a leaving example I will quote your last sentence with a slight modification...

"So this all tells me there is hope and there are more than just us old guys out here who see Obama/Bush/Clinton/Bush for what he really in and not who the propaganda tells people he is."

Politicians say things to get elected...much is propoganda, period.

So, I, agreeing with what many of these students have to say am of no value and "few care," because of their proximity to media. These students in the grand political spectrum are much more important than me?

Bill Clinton back out campaigning 'for everybody that helped Hillary run for president' against Obama - Telegraph

Española [New Mexico] saw Chilled Bill, a man vindicated by events and who knows he was right to warn of Obama's shortcomings.

The event, for which nearly 4,000 people crammed into the town square, was for Diane Denish, the Democratic candidate for governor. Behind in the polls, she had supported Hillary against Obama in 2008 and Bill was back to repay the debt.

Bill, hoarse-voiced but with a glint in his eye, explained that this was his 80th event. He made crystal clear just who he was representing on the campaign trail – and it wasn't Obama. "I planned to do about one stop for everybody that helped Hillary run for president because she's one of only two members of the president's cabinet who cannot participate in politics," he said.

now, here's an individual who represents a great deal

sorry

Yes, and when the next president is elected, we'll hear exactly the same nonsense about him/her. The fact of the matter is the president has limited power, but unlimited ability to be blamed for all of the ills of the nation.

I think the spewers of hype and nonsense went overboard with Obama, spouting about how he isn't a real American, how he was born in Kenya, how he is a Muslim terrorist, how he is a Marxist, and how he is the honest to god real AntiChrist. I don't remember anything approaching that level of total hooey being tossed at Bush or Clinton. Maybe my memory is bad.

Please don't change the subject...I agree, Bill Clinton is of great significance. Much more than you, these students, or myself. My question remains; Am I of less significance, asking the same questions as the students who were in close proximity to the president and the media? Because if so, you are making a ridiculous statement based on hyper-partisanship.

you're fascinating

Unfortunately I do. The fringe left blamed 9/11 on the Bush administration and I remember many Nazi = Bush comparisons. Before that at least it was just a matter of a blowjob out of wedlock. I do agree with you that it does seem to get worse with each administration though.

I also agree that the role of president does seemingly be turning into that of scapegoat, especially as of late

My intention isn't fascination. It's pointing out your ridiculous hyperpartisanship. It appears as if I am wasting my time however, so this will be my last response to you in this thread. If anyone else would like to carry on reasonable debate though, I would be interested.

Come to think of it, they did blame Bush for 9/11. There still are some who believe the crazy conspiracy theory that the US was behind the attack. Not only that, but I can remember Bush being blamed for Hurricane Katrina, not just the response, but the fact that there was a hurricane, as well as the levies failing where the black people lived.

Yes, exaggeration, hype, nonsense, and wacky conspiracy theories seem to be a way of political life.

who wants to debate, it's a waste of time, all that's left for us of age is to observe

POLITICO'S take on this tale, MCCLATCHY'S is not so much about the kids being critical and questioning

it's much more about their having TURNED

he's gone from 60% percent approval, age 18 to 29, vs 15 disapproval in may, 09, to 44 vs 27 today, a drop of TWENTY EIGHT PERCENT, according to AP

and it was reflected in every word, every gesture in the mtv studio

just as it was at georgetown on sept 20 amongst a group selected by the white house, just as it was at the dnc event earlier this week

If President Barack Obama needed any more reminders that it's not 2008, he got another one Thursday night in a town hall with young voters.

Back when he was a candidate, Obama inspired legions of young people who responded to his message of hope, and the feeling that he would move decisively on issues important to them, like gay rights. But after two years in office, he found himself on the defensive before a young audience that wanted to know why he hasn't done as much as he said he would.

If anything, the hourlong show seemed to amplify the fact that the connection Obama has with the age group that infused his campaign with its sense of mission and excitement has frayed.

At another forum this week, this one sponsored by the Democratic National Committee, Obama seemed to acknowledge the problems he faces in reconnecting with his young supporters. “One of the challenges of this election is to make sure we understand that as difficult as things have been, we are moving in the right direction,” he said. “The challenge is to make sure that, once again, hope overcomes fear.”

But the president's attempt to describe his administration’s achievements while explaining the roadblocks it has faced in achieving many of its other goals, seemed more professorial than inspirational, both that night and two days later, on MTV. The relatively subdued response he got at both events underscored the problems Democrats may have in rekindling the connection Obama made with young voters in 2008.

Fired up? Not so much - Abby Phillip - POLITICO.com

the president probably preferred when the kids were less questioning and critical

people like the kids who've come to question might have done better to demonstrate such independence of thought 2 years ago (ask bubba)

better late than never, however

sorry

An identified Republican criticizing Obama for not being bi-partisan probably isn't demonstrating independence of thought. They are just advancing the party line.

If you don't want to debate, then you probably shouldn't be on a debate forum. Anything you say here is meant to be debated. I doubt anybody joined this forum with the expectation our discussions would exert influence on the course of political events.

I'd like to see the Demcrats down to 50 seats in the House for once and 25 in the Senate. They have never been in that position like the Republicans have. I mean really out of power and insignificant. After the way they ****ed this country up since FDR (the worst president in the 20th century), they deserve to have their asses handed to them on a galactic scale.

We should have stricter standards when it comes to debate etiquette. This isn't a venting blog. We don't have to push FDR into this.
