Obama Should Tell Florida Gov. Rick Scott: This Emergency Is Yours... Own It

Right wing GOP governor Rick Scott of Florida spent years trying to destroy the environment for the sake of profit and big business. Now that the waters off Florida have gotten dangerously toxic, he is begging to the federal government to help him out. If the federal government had any sense, they would tell him to screw off, that he caused the problem, and that Florida voters caused this problem by voting him in, so they should be happy to suffer the consequences.

I'm still shocked my state voted him back into office.

I actually agree with this post, Ganapathy.

What a weird day!

What about all the people that didn't vote for him? Should they be punished too?

My friend was going to retire to Florida because she liked boating....but it was the water quality that changed her mind. Now she's going to retire in San Diego.

He should let the state deal with it themselves, and only allow federal assistance if the state agrees to a massive overhaul of its environmental regulations.

From Elk River W VA, to Flint MI, to Florida, the Republican destruction due to their personal greed continues. I have no idea why anyone votes for these guys. Even as much as I dislike Hillary, the thought of pulling the 'R' lever (Trump, or no Trump) makes me cringe! :doh

These problems didn't just start when Republicans took control. These problems, like the ones in Florida, originated with decisions made in the 1930's and 1940's - mostly by Democrats in New Deal projects, but I don't blame either party. I blame the bureaucracies that prevent the government from changing course once a project or policy or plan has been put in place. The bureaucracies are fed by the stratus quo. The bureaucracies are where the power actually lies, where the big companies feed the system by helping to maintain the status quo as long as it's in their best interest. Big business can be, and has been, rolled over like an ant under a steamroller when the bureaucracy feels threatened.

I wouldn't be so quick to blame either party, in fact as I said before I wouldn't actually blame either party, or politics, but I damn sure wouldn't just believe that the GOP are the singular culprit in some hyperbolic accusation of wanting to grease the skids for their business buddies at the risk of the citizens health and lives.

Just my opinion.

It is all caused Big Sugar and they should pay to fix it. Instead we subsidize these a-holes driving up sugar prices here. That's why all the candy companies moved to Mexico. They need to give that land back to the Govt. and pay to return the flow of water into the everglades. We don't need their expensive sugar. There is a worldwide glut.

Except that the GOP has had a stranglehold on Tallahassee for decades and there is no one else to blame.

What about immigration? He should let the states deal with that too?

Then blame the GOP them, feel good about yourself doing so, and just continue to allow the bureaucrats to continue to do their thing - regardless of which party is in power. You do realize that Lake Okeechobee is a federal project, don't you? And, that the state cannot force the USACE to do much of anything?

The link in the story is about the state of emergency regarding the terrorist attack in Orlando. I suppose thats Rick Scotts fault too? Regarding the algea though, its light on fact and your OP is heavy on hyperbole. Scott is not trying to destroy the environment, even if somehow this were truly happening as a result of any actions he took. But hes also not all powerful. The legislature makes the laws, not Scott. The EPA and the Army Corp of engineers manage the waterways, not Scott.

I am against declaring emergencies for anything and everything though. There have been 50 already this year by FEMA, for floods, fires, snow, tornados, landslides, and water pollution.

First off Scott is a criminal he set the record for Medicare fraud and pled the 5th like 75 times, the man should be behind bars but instead he bought the governorship.

Second, this isn't all on Scott big sugar has been writing the EPA regulations in Florida for decades. Its not just an environmental issue either big sugar wont allow % US daily allowance for sugar to be put on packaging, wonder why we are all fat?

He was never convicted of anything, thus he is not a criminal. There is no daily allowance for sugar. But sugar is listed on every package.

You don't have to be convicted to be a criminal, he simply got away with it and yes there is no daily allowance because if there was people would be shocked and consume less. Big agriculture today is no different than the tobacco companies used to be.
