Prevention measures alone were never going to stop the virus entirely. The idea was to flatten the curve so hospitalizations are manageable. Thus far, spikes in Europe started when people went on holiday this summer, and now that things are opening up across Europe as things go back to normal. The difference there from a leadership perspective is the prevention measures weren't as big of a political issue as they were here, and there's been continual surges since the beginning of the pandemic.

The question for European countries now is how to handle the rise in cases by keeping those who cause it (seemingly young people in Italy) from spreading it to the vulnerable. That's a problem in country like Italy where multigenerational homes are fairly common, so it's likely there will be another spike in deaths as well. As for it being all for naught, there was no way around it because if the spikes in cases leads to high mortality counts, things were going to be a crap show either way.

Many parts of Europe have the same right wing thinking idiots that we have here. As soon as restrictions were slightly lifted, the science deniers acted just like Covid doesn't exist. Hence the third wave. The reason they did much better than we did in the beginning was because they imposed very strict guidelines with attached penalty's. We never did that here.

Lets face it, no one wants to be shut in or have to wear masks all the time. But if we don't, Covid will go on for a real long time. You know who you are, and can be blamed for this extension of Covid.

All of the major first world countries knew that a second wave was coming and have plans to deal with them.

The US never managed the first wave, so the second will be all the more devastating.

You need to define "all for naught" because you seem to be conflating what they did months ago with whats going on now. Please elaborate. Oh, and try to contain your glee that thousands may die. And fyi, when our current death the last 5 months is triple Sweden who did nothing is just not the "trump did nothing wrong" reality you think it is. the fact is if trump had actually done nothing we'd be better off.

I suspect it's less about the "science deniers" and really more about younger people wanting to get back into their normal routines; along with others who are also tired of the continued restrictions. That's not to say it's a reason to forgo the measures, but it's likely those are the folks who are mainly responsible for the new surge. We've seen scenarios where the spread can be contained and managed without large scale spikes, but policies are only effective when there's a good share of compliance.

In my earlier post I mentioned things being a crapshoot either way, which doesn't mean I think nothing should have been done; quite the contrary. I meant that things were going to be hard either way because the pandemic was going to have a large impact societally and economically. In my opinion, it was just about managing the severity of it. In no scenario do I believe life would have gone on as normal with a pandemic spreading uncontrolled throughout the country.

Europe locked down for a long time and now they are surging again. The only way to beat this is for the entire world to lock down completely until there are almost no cases anymore. This includes no going to the grocery, no going anywhere. No work, no nothing. This would bring on a depression that would make the 1930's look like an economic boom and everyone on the planet would suffer for a very long time. This is not acceptable. Once you realize this is the only way to currently stop the virus you realize there is no way to stop the virus other than what we are already doing.
