Neat stuff. The German trenches were in better shape than the Allied works. When the front became static, the Germans redeployed as necessary, so as to construct their trenches on high, drained ground--even if it meant falling back. The Brits and the French refused to give up an inch, even if it meant building earthworks that would constantly have standing water in them.

Interesting, though apparently it was all kinds of nasty even in WWII. I don't recall where he was at the time, but an older relative who is now gone who was in WWII got his legs caught up and run over by a tank they were trying to repair a track on or something but it was so muddy it just squished him into the ground so he didn't suffer any serious injuries.
