Neat stuff. The German trenches were in better shape than the Allied works. When the front became static, the Germans redeployed as necessary, so as to construct their trenches on high, drained ground--even if it meant falling back. The Brits and the French refused to give up an inch, even if it meant building earthworks that would constantly have standing water in them.
