According to a national election poll by Edison Research and presented by the Wall Street Journal, Americans making $200,000 per year were more likely to vote Republican in the recent election by a margin of 62% to 36%, while people earning less than $30,000 per year were more likely to vote Democratic by a margin of 58% to 40%. They break even roughly at the median income point. There you have it: Specific data backing up the ongoing perception that the GOP is the Party of, by, and for the rich - as if anyone didn't already know.

Yes, yes, I know it's obvious. But it's always worth looking at the data from time to time to reasses assumptions. Apparently the sky is still blue, water is still wet, and Republicans are still all about plutocracy.

Well simply being rich isn't a sin or a crime, and just cause someone is rich doesn't mean they are Mr. Burns or anything.

Of course not - roughly 36% of rich people appear to be at least moderately un-Burnsy.

surprise, surprise.

rich people are more likely to vote for the party that doesn't want to raise their taxes. say it ain't so!!!!!!!

what bombshell are you going to drop on me next??? are poor people more likely to vote for the party that promises more handouts and entitlement programs??? what a shocker.

Know why that is?

"Those who rob from Peter to pay Paul will always have Paul's support."

rich people often vote dem too-especially the uber rich ones who see welfare socialism as a way of solidfying their position at the very top

the way things work is that most people aren't going to be rich but the country is better off when most of the citizenry believes they can be or want to be and work hard to achieve that. those sort of people vote GOP

when a majority of the country buys into the dem belief that the game is rigged and they cannot achieve prosperity and therefore should quit trying and striving to make it but rather they should lay back and suckle on the public teat of dependency-then the dems win.

in the long run, the dem policies are one of drug addiction and dependency-it might feel good to the the junkies but in the long run it ruins t hem

Really, this isn't shocking...

The "rich" has the best shot at getting "something" from the government with Republicans in power, IE tax breaks

The "poor" have the best shot at getting "something" from the government with Democrats in power, IE entitlements

The Middle Class breaks both ways and are generally have a shot at getting a benefit from either party.

Surprise, a majority of people now and always will tend to act in their own best interest.

I do love how apparently "under 30k" is the "working class" and $200k is the "rich"....so the middle class is $31k to $199k, but we'll just ignore that grouping.

why are all those ultra rich, ultra lib hollywood turds never included in any of these bash the rich threads? almost all of them vote for democrats and they are among the richest people in the country.

This thread's bashing rich people?

1. people earning more than 30K are still working class.

2. so the people who are more succesfull, have figured out how the economy works, have good work ethics, and are more practiced at putting their education to work in the real world are more likely to vote republican, while those who have less experience, less education, and/or choose to live off the backs of others votes democrat?

yeah, that kind of figures.

Well the OP did say that any rich person that votes Republican is a "Mr. Burns" type...which I would think is pretty evident as an insult to Rich People, albiet republican ones.

actually being rich is generally an indication that one has built a small business from the ground up, improved your local area, created jobs, raised standards of living, and provided higher quality goods or services to consumers for a lower price.

my favorite line is "working people" a term rich dems (most of whom never earned their wealth) and Union bosses use to describe Union members. If those union types did the sort of hours that a surgical resident or a wall street law firm associate did it would kill most of them. My late father was (for all the time I was around-he started at the company working summers sweeping out the shop) first a VP, then President then CEO of a decent sized manufacturing business. the Union guys were mostly hard workers but the minute their shift was over, they were done working. My father-who had three sick days in 30 years till he was laid up with the cancer that killed him (at 80 he was still sending emails to his #2 while on his death bed)-started his day with a breakfast meeting with clients, managment, lawyers or union leaders. Then worked til 6 or so-several nights a week it was dinners with clients etc. Monthly or more often- business trips to Korea, China, Japan, Germany etc. more than a few times, someone would get hurt or fall ill on the night shift-Dad would get a call at 2 or 3 AM in the morning and he'd be at the ER room a half hour later. One night, a welder suffered a fatal heart attack and it was Dad who went and told the man's family. Yet, the dems don't consider that "working".

The fact is those who tend to make it to the top tend to be the ones who really are the "working class"

Then why would they overwhelmingly vote Republican this time?

especially the uber rich ones who see welfare socialism as a way of solidfying their position at the very top

Which might make sense if "welfare socialism" had anything to do with the Democratic Party, but its policies mainly concern progressive taxation to fund infrastructure investment.

the way things work is that most people aren't going to be rich but the country is better off when most of the citizenry believes they can be or want to be and work hard to achieve that.

Absolutely. And a crucial piece of that belief is having a good educational and health care system, because otherwise people either won't have the tools to suceed or will end up trapped in a spiraling quagmire of debt due to perfectly normal health expenses. We have neither at the moment - a state of affairs that only benefits the people responsible for it, Republicans.

those sort of people vote GOP

People vote GOP for different reasons, but the most relevant to this thread is that the GOP buys votes with a perpetual series of tax cuts.

when a majority of the country buys into the dem belief that the game is rigged and they cannot achieve prosperity and therefore should quit trying and striving to make it but rather they should lay back and suckle on the public teat of dependency-then the dems win.

Except nothing you just said has anything to do with the Democratic Party in this universe. You're arguing with a fiction of your own invention to avoid addressing the central fact: Rich people vote Republican because Republicans buy their votes. They do not say "We think your tax level should be x" and then commit to reducing it no further. Rather, they demonize the very concept of the wealthy paying taxes, and will gladly reduce them to zero and beyond while the national infrastructure disintegrates.

you are just talking out your six. Its dems who buy peoples' votes with my and other peoples' money

The GOP Gives me NOTHING-they saving grace is wanting to take LESS. Dems buy the votes of people like you by telling you others will pay for your health care, your education, etc.

one party supports those who create wealth, the dems support those who want to redistribute that wealth

you claiming that my vote is bought with my own money is one of the most moronic bits of horse excrement I have ever seen but its to be expected from those who support the parasitic left

Not really. Being VERY rich is very often the result of inheritance. The result of one's 'station' in life. The Steve Job's and Bill Gates' of the world are a phenom.

depends on where you want to cut the 'very' rich line.

millionaires, for example, are overwhelmingly first-generation. i have never seen figures for billionaires, but i would suspect the majority of their wealth is their own creation. do you have any kind of evidence to back up your claim?

Is it a bad thing that the rich tend to vote Republican? Rich people aren't evil, and I think it's common sense that they would vote for the party that supports lower tax cuts for them.

Unfortunately, you can't "I know you are, but what am I" your way out of this one. Republicans have run every single election cycle for decades pledging upper-income tax cuts, and have immediately delivered them as soon as they're in a position to do so - paying off their party's fundraising base. It is a direct quid pro quo: Put us in power, get a fatter paycheck. Where is the comparable "payoff" you're alleging on the part of Democrats, and who is supposedly receiving it?

The GOP Gives me NOTHING -they saving grace is wanting to take LESS.

No, Turtle - they take it all. They just give you a piece of their loot up front, and let you pay it back with interest in later years through skyrocketing costs of living.

Dems buy the votes of people like you by telling you others will pay for your health care, your education, etc.

In other words, pledging to provide opportunities is "buying votes," while pledging to dole out more money to rich people isn't? Turtle, Democrats are doing their job supporting health care and education, but Republican tax proposals aren't based on anything - they push lower rates every single election cycle as standard practice. It's nothing more than payoffs and kickbacks.

one party supports those who create wealth, the dems support those who want to redistribute that wealth

Democrats create wealth by investing in the underpinnings of the economy that make it all possible, and Republicans redistribute public resources to the wealthy elite by cutting their taxes and systematically underfunding institutions. The elite then uses this money to outsource jobs and strip the American economy of productive capital. This benefits them in several ways: (1) It destroys labor unions, (2) it allows them to do business in foreign countries with poor human rights records, and (3)it lets them evade paying taxes to an even greater extent. The Republican Party has zero loyalty to this country. Zero.

you claiming that my vote is bought with my own money

It's not your money, it's tax money that you pay in exchange for using the entire ecosystem of institutions that make your job possible. Not paying it just means someone else is paying it for you, and probably someone a lot less able to afford it. This is Civics 101 here, I shouldn't have to explain this.
