Simple question, would you vote for a candidate if they were an atheist? Or would their atheism be a deal-breaker for you?

I would rather than an atheist than a man who believes "God talks to him."

Of course I would. I would 10x rather have a person in office who didn't believe in fairy tales.

As it is though, atheist or not, politicians have to at least pretend to follow some kind of mythology, and I don't really concern myself with which mythology they follow. Whether they believe in the easter bunny or santa claus doesn't really matter to me. However, all other things being equal, if I had a choice between an atheist and a follower of mysticism, I'll take the atheist.

I'd say yes, though it all depends on the person. I don't care about a person's religious or spiritual faith or lack there of, as long as it doesn't get in the way of logical and reasonable judgments.

It depends.

Are they are hard-core, devout atheist?

As in, do they not accept any other view as valid?

If so, it would be just as bad as a hard-core, devout christian.

To me that is not a yes or no answer.............

Is the atheist we are talking about here conservative?

I would vote for whoever I think is a good politician. Religious affiliation or lack of it would not come into my voting decisions.

Not typically. Absolutism requires a god, strict law making and literal interpretations of law are absolutist. Atheist are relativistic generally because of this which is really not a conservative mentality. Many libertarians are atheist but.. libertarianism is going to the dumpster in terms of being an acceptable political philosophy these days. Unless the Atheist has dogmatic faith in libertarianism.. which is possible I suppose.

EDIT:Then again libertarianism is diametrically opposed to conservatism in many ways.

So... Atheists generally aren't conservative because strict interpretations of law are absolutist, which requires a God?

When I line up main line conservative beliefs and atheism I really can't figure anything that atheism would somehow prevent someone from believing in it.

Exactly what conservative tenants do you think are most opposed to atheism?

Well that would be the religious rights affinity for moral absolutism.

I would vote for an atheist I agreed with on most of the important issues so long as it could be shown that they were not "anti-religion" zealots. One of the cornerstones of this country is freedom of religion, as long as an atheist were able to approach the issue with some modicum of respect and their other political stances were in line with my own, than yeah, I'd vote for the atheist.

I would rather take the one who I agreed the most with policy wise. Their religious views are secondary.

A politician's religious beliefs is not something I take into account in deciding who to vote for. Therefore, I could and would vote for an atheist whose political philosophy I agreed with.

Hell no, unless the atheist was clearly superior to the believer.

Ironically the Atheist is not respected by the religious. It would be a little much to expect respect from an Atheist when the religious are terribly discriminating. But otherwise if that wasn't the case I would agree. Freedom of religion includes freedom from religion. There are things that the religious do that are actually quite offending to non believers. Of course it is all based on some phantom that no one can quantify. Further religion has a thick collectivist mentality. For example drawing pictures of Muhammad is completely unacceptable to Islam and they feel even if you don’t believe in their religion .. your still not allowed to draw this character. Further reasoning that religion should not indoctrinate children into their said cult whichever it is. Atheist in general find this very offending. So getting these groups to be civil with one another is a bit like trying to get oil and water mixed.

It depends on his views. I wouldn't not vote for him because he is an atheist, but probably due to the values that most atheists hold.

Only if he is in line with MY political issues and philosophy, which is conservative. I don't give a **** if he is atheist, although I do think it's a good quality in a person to follow SOMETHING because he may think there is no greater power than he to hold himself accountable. But largely irrelevant. If he has this charles dawkins attitude "All religion is bad we are better off without it, re-educate people! do whatever we can to stop people from believing!", then, absolutely not.

I don't consider someone's beliefs or lack of beliefs to be important in themselves. I try to go with the person who I think will do the best job at the time and who I agree with on the most issues. I also look at how much respect they have for other people's points of view. I don't think I could vote for someone who publicly stated that he felt all religious people were stupid or ignorant just as I don't think I could vote for someone who publicly stated that he felt all atheists were immoral or evil. All politicians should publicly show respect for even those beliefs that they don't agree with or actually privately respect.

Athiesm All The Way!

Policies that make sense that aren't ordained or influenced by god... couldn't ask for anything better.

Depends on the Atheist in question.

What if he/she is a completely illogical individual who believes in all the conspiracy theories out there - and an atheist as well?

Would you vote for that person over, say, an individual who was a devout Christian and factored the values they acquired from that belief into their decisions?

Nah...Id have no problem voting for an agnostic...someone who didnt know...didnt claim to know...didnt care to know...but probably not an athiest. Most athiests I know are dicks. They are as idiotic about their zealous non-religous dogma as their zealous religous counterparts.

I believe in God, though I'm far from devout. Further, I feel that if you choose to believe in something else or nothing at all, that's your business. I disagree that you think that Parents shouldn't teach their children about their religions....once they get old enough to decide for themselves they will. Personally I've seen far more disparaging remarks made by atheists to the religious than I have the opposite. You just made one in your post. When it comes to matters of faith, there are plenty of things I disagree with, but I try to do it respectfully. Most atheists I know...most, not all.....don't bother with the same courtesy.

Well atheists are no different then anyone else in terms of how many are "dicks". I prefer their company personally. You must hate half the republican party.
