When I thought about doing this poll, I thought that most Americans still wouldn't. But the poll I looked up to post this has apparently changed that information:
Majority Of Americans Would Vote For An Atheist For President (POLL)

I would like to ask as a DP poll though, would you vote for or consider voting for an Atheist in any public office, not just the Presidency.

As a discussion point, I believe there are six states that do not allow Atheists to hold public office, even though that is against the US constitution.

Also as an Atheist, my vote is naturally yes.

I'll vote for whoever matches me best on the issues, but I'd actually really prefer my candidates to be atheist. With religious candidates you always have to worry if they'll place their god or religion above their contituents. Some politicians will even go out of their way to make sure you know their god comes first. Their sole and only responsibility should be to the American people.

I'll vote for whoever best represents my interests and opinions AND who would be capable of implementing her/his policies and commitments. I'm pretty sure that would not be a person standing on a fundamentalist religious platform. It doesn't bother me that my rep and I might not share the same religious convictions. Everyone has their own road to follow.

Assuming his politics lined up best with mine of all the available candidates, then yes.

It would have no bearing on how I voted

Religion or the lack there of has never been important to me with any political candidate. It is his views on the issues and whether I can trust him, if I feel he will do honor to the office and do the best job. The same goes for political parties or the lack there of too, party affiliation is not important, it is the individual running.

No, atheists have no morals.

Everyone lives by their own creed or a creed they viewed a the right one for them, be it religion, society, etc. Morals can be subjective. What is moral to me, may no be to you.

Would an Anarchist vote for the Anti-christ?

Atheist at best follow mans laws, IMO a deeper law needs adhered to.

That is simply no true. Atheists can and do have a deep moral compass.

Don't dehumanize atheists. All people have the same conscience. There are many atheists who are governed by their conscience, and many professing Christians who ignore their conscience.

Well on that I agree.

That's either your own consciousness or your ethics based on what you read in a book.

Sometimes I get burned out on the thought of a "god" whatever that is. All the suffering in the world at times makes me think their just can't be a caring God so I quit my morning prayer. After a while things start seeming bleak though so I start to pray again and immediately things are better so it works for me.

And our politicians who are claiming religion, they're following these deeper laws then? So you're already voting for people who don't, why not an atheist? Not like they're going to be worse than your phony Christians already in office.

Do whatever works for you.

Unfortunately life often boils down to choosing the lesser of two evils.

The lesser of two evils is still evil. And you're throwing out atheists not because they are "evil" but because you THINK they are evil; all the while supporting our descent into hell. Good job.
