I think intel must be smoking crack to come up with such a dumb idea.

Intel

Intel will soon sell processors that have been deliberately hobbled. In a scheme to be piloted with a limited number of retailers in Canada, the US, Spain and the Netherlands, the Santa Clara-based company shall sell a processor that can be “upgraded”. The CPU in question is the new Pentium Processor G6951 and to upgrade it you simply purchase a $50 “Processor performance Upgrade Card”, download and run an app from Intel and then insert the code on the card and some additional features will be unlocked.

The upgrade will result in 1 MB of additional cache being unlocked and hyper-threading enabled. What does that actually mean? Intel say:

The CPU Performance upgrade for Intel® Pentium™ Processor G6951 benefits compute-intensive applications that are designed to take advantage of multiple computing threads and larger CPU cache sizes. Examples include:

* Multitasking
* Rendering of photos, film, or music
* Most kinds of digital content creation
* Enjoying high-definition media

People buy crippled technology all of the time only to have it "improved" later on. It's called Apple.

Indeed. Especially since you'll be able to buy a good processor for cheaper and get the free hack to unlock HT and 1MB of cache. Intel's on crack for thinking that they'll actually control the distribution.

The G6951 is just a Dual 2 Core 2.8 with HT. It would have to be priced pretty cheap. A Dual 2 Core HT would be a pretty decent rig. Especially if you OCed well beyond 3 ghzs. That could give i5s runs for their money easy. So if they price this cheap and if the hack comes out quick, they could see a real market. But no one in the right mind would buy this without thinking of getting the free hack.

AMD has been doing it for many years. Their dual core processors were and are just neutered quad core processors and with a bit of knowledge then you can unlock the full power... of course warranty goes out the window.

This is as great as when home video became possible and they wanted to make it so you had to go to a store and pay to rewind to rewatch.
