How do you feel about this?

You are traveling a distance with family or friends, and in the rear view mirror are 3 black Suburbans with red and blue lights behind the grill. They don't pass you nor are driving oddly.

About an hour down the road you pull in for gas and all 3 pull in behind you, stopping back from you. When you get going, they are again behind you. Another hour later you all stop at a restaurant, and all 3 cars follow you in.

While you are sitting at the table, you see them looking in all the windows of your car, and then those 6 from those cars come in and all are wearing badges. 2 have their hand crossed over under a jacket as if having their hand on a gun in a shoulder holster. All 6 stand in a corner near you and never take their eyes off you. Not for a second.

You ask, "Can I help you with something?"
You get a dry "no."
Then you ask "it seems you are watch us."
One of them replies, "Yes."
You ask "why? "
One of them answers: "To keep you safe and to make sure that none of you hurt anyone."
You ask "Are we in danger?"
The answer: "Yes, all of you are danger. Everyone is in danger."
You ask: "Do you think we are dangerous to other people?"
And the dry answer back is "that what we are trying to figure out about you."

Is there anything in that senario you would be troubled by? Would be glad they are there doing this?

That is how I feel about the massively growing level of government surveillance of everyone.

How do you feel about this topic of universal government surveillance and records keeping on everyone?

It would make me feel very uncomfortable and maybe a bit uneasy. But I would continue on my way. For one, 1v6 is not a good odd to fight my way out and secondly, if they're armed and determined, and I'm not, if I start a confrontation I may become a victim.

Just take in their POV, swallow your distaste and move on.

Seems like something out of a poorly written sci-fi movie.

I'm calling the local sheriff and not moving until he/she straightens out the situation.

I wouldn't. I would get a motel room and wait them out. Would I feel safer with them there? No, I would see them as a danger to us.

I actually had a similar experience to what the OP describes.

I was making the long trek back to SLC from LA by myself, when a guy in a Camero started following me. He was riding my bumper. So I'd speed up, he'd speed up. I'd pass cars, he'd pass cars. I'd slow down, he'd slow down. He was ****ing with me to be sure and I just couldn't seem to lose him. I'd heard that several women had been abducted along that highway and their bodies later found in the desert. So this this little cat and mouse chase went on for a good two hours or more. Finally, I came to the Nevada border and pulled into a truck stop and he pulls in after me and then slowly drives past flashing a badge and then drives off. End of story.

Tell you how to make this really happen, send about 3 threatening emails to the WH. Some guys in black suits and sunglasses will knock on your door one night and escort you in handcuffs to a location unknown for some fun time.

People impersonating police is not that rare. It would seem to be virtually the perfect rapist, robber and murderer ploy in remote areas unfortunately. Nor are all cops good guys either.

Black SUV's don't bother me. It's the black helicopters you need to watch out for.

Helicopters run the coastline of this area every night and often.

I have no idea what his intent was, I just knew it wasn't good. I've been followed many times but that one was the most frightening.

If they were that obvious, and I had time, I'd take the looooooooong way home.

The appropriate action would be to go into the rest room. If they follow you while you are standing at the urinal and continue watching, turn around and piss on their shoes.

Finally, a rational solution:roll:

The more dependant they become on machines the easier it gets, as you only have to fool the machines.

The analogy is quite apt to our current situation, and I give you kudos for trying to write a story that brings out some of the issues surrounding this. One of the main ones being that we are willing to accept the real situation because it is nearly invisible to us. The fact that this is even more scary than your story will be lost on most readers.

Prove that it is 'not rare'

Where is your data for this

That would cost way too much money, and the probabilities are so low as to not have any affect at all. We should save the money, lose the "security detail" and protect ourselves.

What fun! If I noticed that and they didn't fuel when I did; I'd go into the gas station, buy out the gas containers they got, fill them up and lead them off to my BOP which is 200 miles from anywhere. I'd push those SUVs to their mileage limit and when they go dry offer them some fuel at $100 a gallon .... It's not like they can't pay they just print it up.
