Would the Fed Rather be Bankrupted by the War on Drugs Before it Legalized Them?

Portugal, Switzerland and a few other European countries finally saw the light...that the "War on Drugs" was bankrupting them...so they decided to "decriminalize" drugs (not legalize them--there's a difference). They provide safe place for addicts to shoot up and have a doctor nearby for od's while at the same time the govt. provides counseling to get off drugs and job training for addicts to learn a skill to be able to support themselves. The hope is they'll see drugs as a dead end and find reasons to give up the drugs. AIDS has plummeted, so has crime. A complete common sense approach to the drug addiction problem so naturally the Federal govt. wouldn't be the slightest bit interested in trying it.

Am I too cynical? Would the government rather go bankrupt fighting a losing war on drugs or is that the point of not legalizing drugs--because the Federal govt. and too many special interests are making fortunes keeping the war on drugs going? I see numerous benefits from the point of view of several special interests who would love to see drugs kept illegal:

1. Asset forfeiture.

Over the past decade, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has permanently seized $3.2 billion in cash from individuals who were never charged with a crime, according to a Justice Department inspector general report released Wednesday.

2. Rehab Centers

3. Alcohol Industry

4. Prison Industrial Complex

5. Big Pharma

Any opinions? Would the govt. go bankrupt before it legalized drugs?
