I'm curious as to what everyone thinks...Would Harold Ford have won the Tennessee Senate race if he was white? Bob Corker only won by a little over 3%, and if I had to estimate I would guess that the fact that Ford is black probably cost him at least 5-10% of the vote.

It's really a shame; Harold Ford was one of the best candidates that the Democrats fielded in this election. I hope it doesn't discourage them from fielding serious candidates in the South in the future.

Did he lose because he's black? Do you have proof of this 5 to 10%?

Would Michael Steele have won if HE was white? He was one of the best candidates the Republicans fielded in this election.

My theory is that ford lost because more people voted for the other guy...:lamo :lamo

No, that's why I said "I would guess." Racism is certainly responsible for SOME fraction of the vote in Tennessee. It's just a question of how much.

Meh, I doubt it. Maryland isn't Tennessee. If anything, his race probably helped him in Maryland.

It depends what you mean by one of the best candidates...Ben Cardin was more ideologically in-step with Maryland voters.

Well their demographics are 81% White 17% Black. Do the math.

I actually like Harold Ford and if it did not mean the loss of the Senate it would not have bothered me if he had won.......

From what I have heard him say he is a democrat along the lines of Zell Miller......

Well, Harold Ford is certainly a moderate to conservative Democrat, but I wouldn't compare him to that right-wing nutjob Zell Miller. Unlike Miller, Harold Ford is charismatic and able to work well with both liberals and conservatives. And I've never heard Harold Ford challenge anyone to a duel on national television.

I don't agree with Harold Ford on some things, but he's exactly the type of candidate that the Democrats should run in Southern states. I truly think he'd be the next senator from Tennessee if only he was white.

I personally would love to punch Chris Matthews in his big mouth so I don't hold that against Miller.........

I can remember when Zell Miller was a leader in your party.....It just goes to show how far left your party has moved.........

Of the 6 Democratic pickups in the Senate, 4 of them are moderates. A majority of the House pickups are moderates as well. In fact, you've said so yourself. So hush.

It's called being diverse. Weren't you just bitching about their shift to the far left one post ago? What exactly can they do to placate you?

I doubt it. trying to trick people into thinking he was a Democrat was pretty insulting to anyone's intelligence. do you REALLY think he was the best? jeez, guy.

Your "theory" curiously excluded any explanation as to why anyone voted the way that they did.

About 13% of the US is black. only 1% of the senate is black. And about 17% percent of Tennessee is black.

and Corker gained in polls after the white-girl wink-scare ad. obviously, those folks weren't moved by the issues.

I rest my case: Ford lost because he is black.

I lived in TN for a few years... It's a very conservative state. I doubt he would have won if he were white. There are some truely scary rascists there but many of them probably didn't vote at all.

He lost because he got LESS votes....

But you wish to claim it was race...

and he got less votes because peeps don't be really gung-ho votin' for no black folks.

Cherokee, this is a discussion of voter intent, not outcome. Just keep ignoring the topic. Just keep on not posting any evidence. just keep on with the pointless one-liners and little animated pictures. the rolly eyes and the laughs are for you, guy. you're confused about what the meaning of "because" is. your posts educate no one.

If you wish to educate yourself, read this. or this:

Tate, Katherine. 2001. “The Political Representation of Blacks in Congress: Does Race Matter?” Legislative Studies Quarterly 26(4): 623–38.

It seems people will say that they may support black candidates when polled, but they can't bring themselves to really vote for them in an election.
