Hey all,

I'm just starting out this Poll business, and it looks like some fun. So, I've decided to make a Poll, er, polling who DP thinks is the word mass-murderer in history (no, not like Sweeney Todd -- I'm talking Genghis Khan, etc.).

If I can get this polling mechanism to work correctly, there ought to be ten options...

Please post who you voted for and why, if at all possible.

Cheers!

I don't know if it's the worst but the Holocost is definitely up there I'd think. 6 million plus Jews killed and another 7 million people (gays, Russians, Poles and others).

Oh, yes, the Holocaust is often held up as the defining "genocide" of history, and, in many ways, it is -- an unprecendented, systematic execution of entire races of people. But genocides aren't a 20th century invention...

i'd say Genghis Khan, one of the most common of his tactics was to drive groups of civilians in front of his troops to take the arrows, and used them as the first wave through a breach in city walls, so i imagine that would have killed a fair few.

Stalin or Hitler.

Mao killed a lot of people with bad policies. He didn't set out trying to exterminate people.

Several others on your list can be attributed to outcomes of war.

Cortez? Is mass death by unintentional bacterial warfare genocide? I don't know.
I like your inclusion of Robespierre, but the French Revolution didn't kill that many people and got well out of hand from the people who started it.

I voted Stalin, although Hitler was responsible for an enormous quantity of deaths, Stalin murdered many Millions more.

There is definately a who's whos list there. Should have been an "other" there, though. Chiang Kaishek, while not the top, DOES belong higher than some of them.

I put Mao, though great arguments could be made for Hitler, Stalin and Pol.

If anyone puts Emperor Hirohito, that would be out of gross ignorance.

You should have put the Christian church on there... they killed far more people including genocidal campaigns against non believers.

Pol Pot should definitely be up there.

opp... anti-Christian Euro rears his head...

Well, he's not wrong... but the church isn't an individual, so I don't think it really applies to this thread.

No it is a fact. But Orion is some what right, it aint an individual unless you throw a pope or two into the mix.

Vlad the Impaler

I don't have numbers but he was brutal.

Ivan the Terrible was another crazy **** as well.

Genghis Khan?

Depends on how we measure it.

Total population size? Then Mao wins hands down.

Total % of Population.. and then it is much much more difficult.

I think Pol Pot wins in the later. How many were responsible for the deaths of 1/3 - 2/5 of his entire nation's people?

He was bad, but not the worst. Cortez and other Europeans killed off whole civilizations when they came to America. The US under various Generals wiped out or nearly wiped out several native American tribes. There are many more examples through out history. Problem is pinpointing them.

Not going to get into this asinine argument with you and other anti-Christians like you again. You have the right to be wrong.

I aint anti-Christian.. I just dont ignore the past crimes of religions just because it is a religion.

There all evil assholes.

it completely irrelevant to this thread though, if we were to use the logic you're using, the poll should be "which country is the worst murderer", if you want to point out a certain pope, or a priest, that'd be fine, but saying religion is responsible for the deaths is the same as saying Germany is responsible for deaths.

Okay, how about a conquistador... who went to the new world and wiped out a civilization or a tribe. In % that is 100% genocide, and all conquistadors went as gods servants on behalf of the Catholic Church..

Not to mention Hitler never killed anyone after WW1 as far as I know (other than supposedly Eva Braun after she took poison). And the rest on the list never really killed anyone or at best a very few people.. their regimes and organisations and political structure, which the Christian Church is, did the dirty deeds..

Yes. I can't name any other that massacred a full 50% of his own country's population.

Otherwise, I don't see Karl Marx on the list, and it's his silly ideas, and the silly ideas of the other 19th Century socialists that provided the ideology for the mass murders committed by Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Che, Castro, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, and others. Also, the issue of socialism is the driving cause of almost all the conflicts in africa, and thus the death total of totalitarianism has to include the famines caused by governments in Africa and elsewhere.

Stalin is clearly the most effective mass murderer, Mao could be considered the incompetent second runner up. Hitler's ten million in the concentration camps is just a bump on those charts.

Hitler was the boss of the third reich, the blame is his, like i said, you can't blame the church as a whole, put the blame on the pope who told 'em to go the Americas, or the nobles that sponsored the expedition, the church of itself isn't any more responsible than the German state is for Hitler.
