Unconfirmed scientific breakthrough sparks ethical and moral concerns

A scientist in China claims to have created the world’s first genetically edited babies, in a potentially ground-breaking and controversial medical first.

If true, it would be a profound leap of science and ethics. This kind of gene editing is banned in most countries as the technology is still experimental and DNA changes can pass to future generations, potentially with unforeseen side-effects.

Genetically engineered Chinese babies. Perhaps they have a menu for the parents to choose from: 'with one you get blue eyes; with two you get superior intelligence; with three you get egg roll.'

What could go wrong? Just because we can do something like this doesn't mean we should.

And with the special you get blue eyed, smart egg roll.

Gene-editing scientist under scrutiny by Chinese officials

WASHINGTON — The rebuke from China was fast and furious.

A Chinese scientist who claimed he helped make the world’s first gene-edited babies is now under investigation by government bodies and by his own university.

He Jiankui, a 34-year-old associate professor based in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, said his lab used the powerful gene-editing tool CRISPR to alter human embryos — leading to the births of twin girls earlier this month, he said.

There is not yet independent confirmation of his claim, but scientists and regulators have been swift to condemn the experiment as unethical and unscientific.

I'm glad to see that the Chinese government is apparently on this case.

So who's the twin baby's parents? The scientists who created them? Or are they going to be labeled as orphans? Also, do you think the scientists created these gene edited babies so that they can use them as "human test subjects" for future CRISPR projects or something? I wonder if these babies are going to be immune to diseases since they are created by scientists...

Doing this to repair a defective gene that would lead to the babies death or decreased standard of living I see no problem with. This seemed more like an experiment to try and make HIV resistant baby
