More than 1,400 workers in West Virginia are set to lose their jobs this week when the Viatris pharmaceuticals plant in Morgantown shuts down and moves operations overseas to India and Australia. Workers say they’ve had no response to their urgent requests for help from their Democratic senator, Joe Manchin, who is often called the most powerful man in Washington. Viatris was formed through a merger between two pharmaceutical companies, Mylan and Upjohn. Mylan’s chief executive, Manchin’s daughter Heather Bresch, got a $31 million payout as a result of the corporate consolidation before the new company set about cutting costs, including the closure of the Morgantown plant. Joseph Gouzd, president of United Steelworkers of America Local 8-957 and a worker at the plant, says Viatris has given little reason for the closure except to say the company is looking to “maximize the best interests of the shareholders.” We also speak with investigative journalist Katherine Eban, who says moving pharmaceutical production overseas contradicts the recommendations of numerous reports that have found major safety lapses in drug manufacturing abroad, as well as concern from lawmakers about keeping a key industry within the United States. “This is pure insanity,” Eban says. “It seems like it is both pharmaceutical and national security suicide to close this plant.”

Then there was, as you noted, the scandal around the EpiPen pricing, in which the price was jacked up 400%. Under Bresch’s management, it was handled disastrously. You know, she sort of pulled a Marie Antoinette on national television, saying, “Nobody is more upset about this than I am,” but everybody rightly noted that her compensation has just skyrocketed as Mylan CEO.

Looks like Munchkin is a DINO.

Make the facility a public sector production facility in a not really but sorta exchange for an HR1 vote and a carveout for voting rights to get it passed. Win / win.

Translation: We should take Manchin down so we can forward our leftist agenda. Did you ever hear of, be careful what you wish for? By taking Manchin down you may be turning a blue senate seat into a red senate seat. Are you naive enough to believe that if you take Manchin down, the red state of West Virginia will elect a progressive senator? Really? Have you absolutely no idea that you should be thanking your lucky stars that you have a blue senate seat from a solidly red state?

Wouldn't it be nice if Ms. H. used some of that $31,000,000 to help the people who have lost their jobs?

I guess that's not how the real world is.

I can understand why some people find the idea of socialism rather inviting.

When communism fell in Europe, a lot of people, I read, missed the guaranteed job and housing benefits.

What good is that Blue Senate seat now when it won’t support any Blue bills?

It supports blue bills all the time. Can you really look at me with a straight face and tell me you don't give a damn if the current senate makeup were to be 51-49, favoring the R's? Mitch McConnell would be the Senate leader for Christ's sake! And that doesn't even count other blue seats that could very well turn red if you tried running the traitors out of town. It's just plain stupid to look a gift horse in the mouth. You guys take things for granted and then will wonder why both the House and the Senate turn red at the midterms. Then you'll claim it is gerrymandering.

There’s no practical difference between the Senate now with Democrats nominally in charge and one with McConnell in charge: nothing of substance is getting done.

Socialism for the rich and capitalism for the poor is a classical political-economic argument asserting that, in advanced capitalist societies, state policies assure that more resources flow to the rich than to the poor, for example in the form of transfer payments.[1]

The term corporate welfare is widely used to describe the bestowal of favorable treatment to big business (particular corporations) by the government. One of the most commonly raised forms of criticism are statements that the capitalist political economy toward large corporations allows them to "privatize profits and socialize losses."[2] The argument has been raised and cited on many occasions.

Variations of the concept, include privatize profits/gains and socialize risks/losses/debts; and markets, free enterprise, private enterprise and capitalism for the poor while state protection and socialism for the rich.

I'm pretty sure the point of the article, and the point of the OP, is that Manchin is possibly in taint of corruption, screwing his own constituents so that his family can get rich. If a Republican were to be elected to his seat that wouldn't do that kind of thing (and wouldn't support policies that screw workers), I'd be all for it--party be damned.

Biden's America....... Biden is just sitting back not doing a thing about this? Why?

The story is just there to hurt Democratic senator, Joe Manchin. he won't go along with the insane
behavior of the left so they are going to try to get him how ever they can!

They are also after Democratic senator Kyrsten Lea Sinema for the same reasons.

That's the way America wants it. Most Americans prefer nothing getting done to one party in control.

The point is to take Manchin down because the left have branded him a traitor.

63% of Americans support single payer. They kinda want that to get done.
They don't support it when it comes down to the nuts and bolts. They only support the general idea. When it comes to the price tag, they have second thoughts.

well that sucks for those families and their kids.

Vulture capitalism strikes again… there is nothing Joe Manchin can do about this now.

Why do you think so? Does the article say that, or the OP? Do either of them say something from which you could infer that conclusion?

That’s because the question askers on the surveys that show the result you mentioned don’t make clear that they’ll stop paying insurance premiums. Single Payer is less expensive than the system we have now-at least it’s less expensive everywhere it’s been tried. When that is explicitly part of the question, Americans tend to favor it more.

Comes from a state full of Bubbas and Jim Bobs that value their coal miner jobs more than the planet. Of course he's going to be a clown.

His daughter can do quite a bit with $31M.

Nope. Just win some more Senate seats so as to render Joe Manchin irrelevant and then sit back and watch him kick himself afterwards.
