War plans: Congress OKs $20 mil for victory parties
The military's top generals have warned Iraq is on the cusp of a civil war and that U.S. troops must remain in large numbers until at least next spring. But if the winds suddenly blow a different direction, Congress is ready to celebrate with a $20 million victory party.

Lawmakers included language in this year's defense spending bill, approved last week, allowing them to spend the money. The money for "commemoration of success" in Iraq and Afghanistan was originally tucked into last year's defense measure, but went unspent amid an uptick in violence in both countries that forced the Pentagon to extend tours of duty for thousands of troops.

Umm, how about we have a plan to get out of there and, y'know, stop hemorraging money for one fu/king second.

Carolyn Weyforth, spokeswoman for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tennessee, said, "Republicans are confident we will be victorious in the ongoing war in terror, and we look forward to a time when those funds can be used to honor the men and women who have risked and given their lives."
I'm sick of these spend and spend republicans who are enjoying their blank checks for this malarky. Sigh.

This is exactly why I won't be voting Republican, but I won't be voting Democrat either, I don't think either has represented my values.

Yes, it's beautiful that the republicans want to spend $20 millon when they do this:

Money for Brain Injury Treatment for Troops Slashed
Outraged Veterans Say Congress 'Out of Touch'

WASHINGTON, Aug. 29, 2006 — The head of biggest combat veterans groups lambasted congressional action that cut in half federal funding for the research and treatment of brain injuries caused by explosions, which one neurology expert has called the signature injury of the war in Iraq.

Where the f*** are these people's priorities?

Wow, that's sad considering:
from source above said:
The Bush administration has requested $7 million in funding for the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center as it has done for the last several years, but in the past, Congress has given the center another $7 million, for a total of $14 million. This year, though, Congress has not added the additional funding.

A spokesman for the Senate Appropriations Committee said the reduction in funding from previous years was the result of spending restraints.
Which is much less than the "party". Maybe they figure the brain dead won't eat as much cake.

I am truly disgusted.

Now this story is just spin, get off your high horse folks, they have given 14 million for the last 4 or five years, they just didn't vote for the additional 7 this year, hardly worth the histrionics I am witnessing here today!

Jesus Christ, Deegan. We don't have 7 million to give to this cause DURING WAR but we have 20 million for a f***ing party?

And I said I was totally against that, but perhaps the money was better spent elsewhere, this story does not begin to address that. Maybe it went to other areas, perhaps this year it went to artificial limbs, you don't know, either do I, and as I said, it's spin until we do. Are you people that easily swayed, you read one story, then you're off on a irrational rampage?

They have alloted $20 million for a party. Frankly, that is outrageous. Where is that money coming from? When taken in connection with the fact that funding for research in traumatic brain syndrome, I cannot remotely justify the $20 million for a party.

Neither can I, but they are obviously from much different, separate coffers.

Does that mean you are going to join us Libertarians, or will you be voting Green? Hmmmm, you dont sound like a Greenie to me, so welcome aboard.:2wave:

In this instance I agree with Deegan, just take a step or two back and think where this story may have come from.

Like Deegan I too will not be voting for either of the 2 main party's.

The Dems seem to think that attacking the GOPs policies is all that is required as well as widely broadcasting the problems that the GOP suffer, but let us be quite honest, scandals can and do erupt from time to time within both party's.
Should the Dems come up with a sound platform of idea's then perhaps I would support them.

You know we agree on a lot of our conservative views, fiscal responsibility, states rights, less government, etc, but I am not sure that Lib. is the way I want to go just yet. You guys do seem a bit too isolated for me, and I think we need to get out there and spread freedom, but I am caught in the middle it would appear.
