President Trump’s head popped up during his top-secret intelligence briefing in the Oval Office on Jan. 28 when the discussion turned to the novel coronavirus outbreak in China.

“This will be the biggest national security threat you face in your presidency,” national security adviser Robert O’Brien told Trump, according to a new book by Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward. “This is going to be the roughest thing you face.”

Matthew Pottinger, the deputy national security adviser, agreed. He told the president that after reaching contacts in China, it was evident that the world faced a health emergency on par with the flu pandemic of 1918, which killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide.

Ten days later, Trump called Woodward and revealed that he thought the situation was far more dire than what he had been saying publicly.

“You just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed,” Trump said in a Feb. 7 call. “And so that’s a very tricky one. That’s a very delicate one. It’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flu.”

“This is deadly stuff,” the president repeated for emphasis.

At that time, Trump was telling the nation that the virus was no worse than a seasonal flu, predicting it would soon disappear, and insisting that the U.S. government had it totally under control. It would be several weeks before he would publicly acknowledge that the virus was no ordinary flu and that it could be transmitted through the air.
======================================================================================
Intentionally misleading the nation about the nature of a major public health crisis is pretty despicable. This gives Biden a body blow for the debates: Trump is an acknowledged liar.

You beat me to it, Jack. :doh I'm just hearing this in Andrea Mitchell's breaking news report. A reporter says that this revelation may indeed be Trump's Waterloo, the one thing he may not recover from politically. What Bolton, Mary Trump and Cohen failed to do in their tell-all books, Woodward may have done. This may be the last nail in the coffin for Trump's reelection.

I hope Woodward has these interviews on tape.

It never ceases to amaze me how a breathtaking story with dire consequences for the very survival of humanity actually was known in January but didn't become newsworthy until September.

Woodward is a washed up hack.

A Washington Post reporter claims a couple months before the election that Trump privately told him something not-so-good a long time ago?

Color me unconvinced...

Don't count on it.

Trump acknowleged lying to the country about the severity of the virus threat. Since the interviews appear to have been done over the phone, there is a good chance that they are on tape.

They are on tape. But I would suggest not to count on anything but your vote or he'll be reelected.

Woodward was preparing to write a blockbuster book. All the books coming out now are selling in the million+ range.

If there is nothing you can do about it, sometimes not telling the worst case scenario is the right thing to do.

So operating on best information which is changing daily, such as how the virus is transported, means you don't try to create a panic, unless of course you are a democrat who wants to win the next Presidential election. Democrats always seem to be alarmist.

Lutherf can't come up with a lie that isn't too stupid for him to spew in Trump's defense.

:lamo

That's telling.

He hates "the left" (or is it all other Americans but himself and his family?) so very much that he simply does not care that POTUS lied and denied, knowing COVID would kill so very many people. Sickening.

But that's the point with Trumpism: behave in the ugliest manner possible to prove that you are better than those hated librulz Fox is always brainwashing you about.

Right. His objective is to sell books, not necessarily to present news.

Trump is so arrogant that he cannot even comprehend the idiocy of telling someone like Woodward these very damaging things. He is so used to saying horrible things about people that I don't even think he reflects upon the outcome at all. This is what a person who is never held accountable turns into if they have a personality like Trump. He is a sociopath and for some reason, his business dealings have rewarded him for being a sociopath. It also reveals the utter greed and cowardice of everyone he has ever done business with for decades. From the local authorities to the vendors to the banks to the buyers, he treats them all like dirt and they go along to make a buck. The whole thing is an indictment of the way some people do business. I sure as hell don't do business like this and if anyone that worked for me tried this stuff, they would be fired on the spot.

Yes, he does and that's why this is a bombshell breaking news. You hear Trump tell Woodward, "I'll tell you, Bob, this is a deadly disease. It's worse than the most strenuous flus..." and then he goes on TV and says just the opposite.

Woodward is a washed up hack.

On the contrary, Woodward's actions have made it a certainty that Trump will lose in November. Trump cannot recover from this.

Woodward may be a hack, but he's certainly not washed-up.

Taking down two presidents is a monumental feat.

Trump should probably stop calling up Woodward to gossip.
