Women Who Hate Other Women

Most women will tell you that they have survived at least one mean girl in their past: a girl who dismissed, put down, or even socially tormented them. What does the research say?

Essentially, this is a form of stigma management. This is what I've been saying for years.

Put a group of people in a cultural pressure cooker where everything they do is somehow wrong, and they will try to come up with ways to protect their sense of self. How they do it will depend on lots of factors. For women, since they are unable to isolate themselves from those who pressure and subjugate them, some of them fight amongst other women to push and shove themselves ahead of it, or become the exception to their stigma.

I often see this as the single biggest impediment to women's mental health and social solidarity. But then, the groups that can isolate have problems of their own too...
