Maybe Moldova, whose predominant language and culture is Romanian, should consider merging with Romania to enable it to better resist Russian threats and aggression.

Moldova has a shaky history, being part of the Ottoman and Russian empires. As noted in Wikipedia, “In February 1918, the Moldavian Democratic Republic declared independence and then integrated into Romania later that year following a vote of its assembly.”

However, in 1940, Romania was forced to concede Moldova to the Soviet Union as a result of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. When the Soviet Union dissolved, Moldova declared independence in 1991. Perhaps a referendum to reunite Moldova and Romania could be held in both nations, maybe overseen by EU monitors.

As a member of NATO, Romania, with the newly annexed Moldova, would be in a better position to squash the breakaway region of Transnistria and force out the 1,500 Russian soldiers there.

Or it could unify with Ukraine - a much better idea (after the Ukrainians are victorious in their war with Russia).

It's hard. First there is the fact that a Moldovan identity now exists. Many Moldovans feels like they are Moldovans, not Romanians.

Second there is Transnistria. And Romania doesn't want the region, it was a Russophone region that was attached to Moldova when the SSR was created. Romania's claims to that region are weak, and mostly Romania just doesn't want tot touch it because it would increase tensions with Russia.

Third there is Gagauzia, an autonomous region within Moldova. Autonomous regions are banned according to the Romanian constitution. Furthermore according to the Moldovan constitution Gagauzia would be allowed to vote for independence if Moldova ever were to join another nation (read Romania).

These are the reasons I don't believe in Romanian reunification. Moldova is not a country that's going to disappear (unless the Russians invade it).

Why do I have this feeling the Pax Americana that has kept Europe at peace since WWII is about over? Seems like Europeans of all stripes are bored and spoiling for a good fight.

Pax Americana didn't apply to the former SSRs. It is the USSR offspring that are agitating for war.

People may not believe in it but if they don't want to submit to Vlad the Murderer, they may not have much choice.

Ah yes, “give up your country and let a NATO member annex your or those scary Russians will get you!” I’m sure THAT’S going to inspire trust for the US and its allies across the globe🙄
