Although they've had a largely free pass from the media, it's the Democrats whose refusal to compromise really got the shutdown ball rolling.

Democrats have been unwilling to compromise on Obamacare.:peace

The GOP wants the Dems to compromise on the ACA with a gun to their heads.

No thanks.

Restart the govt, raise the debt ceiling, then we can talk.

Yeah. That must be it.

The GOP wants the Dems to compromise on the ACA with a gun to their heads.

The democrats are free to "unload the gun" if they wanted to by simply passing the bills that fund all other sections of the government. The ACA lacking funding won't be noticed anyways as it is a cluster**** now regardless.

Maybe I misunderstand this "compromise" thing, but don't both sides have to compromise, not just one?

A Gun ? Really ?

Enough with the hyperbole, its the Democrats who are refusing to compromise here as they ignore the will of the people as represented by the majority GOP in the House.

Because they don't have to.

That exactly it. As long as they can successfully shift blame it's a win/win for the dems. Of course if the public gets a peek at that man behind the curtain thinking that way the roles will be reversed.

Why would the democrats be willing to talk then? They haven't been willing to talk up to this point.

If the government is restarted and the debt ceiling is raised, do you really think the Democrats will start to talk? Or, like me, do you think the Republicans will be right where they have been for the past 3 years...the Republicans talking and the Democrats ignoring?

I think a gun to their heads is all that will ever get the Democrats talking.

Compromise on what? The PPACA aka as ObamaCare is LAW was ruled constitution by the right leaning SCOTUS. Did Obama change some parts of the law, he sure did, he is the decider just as President Bush when he signed all those signing statements.

As Mr. Krauthammer wrote:

"The most ubiquitous conventional wisdom is that the ultimate cause of these troubles is out-of-control tea party anarchists.

But is this really where the causal chain ends? The tea party was created by Obama’s first-term overreach, most specifically Obama*care. Today’s frantic fight against it is the echoing result of the way it was originally enacted.
From Social Security to civil rights to Medicaid to Medicare, never in the modern history of the country has major social legislation been enacted on a straight party-line vote. Never. In every case, there was significant reaching across the aisle, enhancing the law’s legitimacy and endurance. Yet Obama*care — which revolutionizes one-sixth of the economy, regulates every aspect of medical practice and intimately affects just about every citizen — passed without a single GOP vote."

GWB never treated the Dems as BHO has treated the Repubs. BHO's political malpractice is the origin of this mess.:peace

If the GOP had presented a legitimate, functional alternative, they would have a better case. Regrettably, I don't see what the Dems will "compromise" to. When you present an "all or nothing" situation, it's hard to persuade your opponent to surrender. I, for one, would like to have seen a much efficacious approach to providing health care.

With or without Obamacare, people are still being treated at ERs and society is still picking up the tab, directly or indirectly. There are certainly better, simpler, more appealing approaches but I haven't seen anyone present them.

I'm confident that backroom dealings and rewards will eventually result in surrender. The show must go on.

In order to compromise both sides have to give up something.

What will the GOP give up?

A Gun ? Really ?

Enough with the hyperbole, its the Democrats who are refusing to compromise here as they ignore the will of the people as represented by the majority GOP in the House.

One third of the elected government

The other two thirds are controlled by the democrats

Why do the republicans ignore the will of the people as represented by president and the senate

In order to compromise both sides have to give up something.

What will the GOP give up?

Republicans have to accept the ACA as the law of the land.

Then Democrats can negotiate.

What will the GOP give up?

Repubs have already given up much. To quote from the longer print version of Krauthammer's column in the WaPo:

"The Democrats insist they welcomed contributing ideas from the Republicans. Rubbish. Republicans proposed that insurance be purchasable across state lines. They got nothing. They sought serious tort reform. They got nothing. Why? Because, admitted Howard Dean, Democrats didn't want to offend the trial lawyers. . . . Having stuffed Obamacare down the throats of the GOP and the country, Democrats are now paying the price.":peace

Why do the republicans ignore the will of the people as represented by president and the senate

Because, in the case of Obamacare, the Democratic Senate and the President are not following the will of the people.

The 2012 election was a referendum on ObamaCare.

ObamaCare won.

Sorry, but Dems can't say Obamacare is a descendant of Romneycare, and then say the 2012 election was a referendum on Obamacare. One or the other, not both.:peace

You know the House actually passed bills to restart the government right?

Do you seriously expect Democrats to negotiate? On anything? It won't happen as long as they hold the Senate and the Presidency. It won't happen until they lose their stranglehold.

The 2012 election was a referendum on ObamaCare.

ObamaCare won.

No it wasn't.

The 2012 election was a result of smears, lies and innuendo. Obama avoided talking honestly about Obamacare all throughout his campaign...just as he avoided talking about every other serious issue. The only reason he won was because he played a successful strategic game.

National polls before his campaign, during his campaign and after his win continue to show that the people don't like Obamacare and don't want it.

The ACA has had over 100 amendments and modifications made by Republicans during it's passage into law. To hold the country to ransom demanding further wrecking changes to the law is invidious. They had their chance, time to give up.

The 2012 election was a referendum on ObamaCare.

ObamaCare won.

That's the most idiotic statement and argument ever. Sadly, our idiot President uses it too. If that were the case, the polls would show the country favoring ObamaCare, yet they never have.....
