Why was American slavery so brutal?

Because the consequences of slavery are still felt in American society to this day.

Really?

seems to me the potato Famine Irish had NOTHING too?

What the hell does that have to do with slavery in the US? And yes, the racism that surrounded black slavery in America is still being felt by black people.

Oh look, the kid just can't resist Posting Last!!! And with fake ad homs to boot.

Oh look, the Lost Cause fanboy is throwing a tantrum again. I get that you aren‘t capable of actually defending your posts and therefore have to wail constantly, but that’s laughable even by your standards.

Ante-bellum pro-slavery, its institutional and religious implications, remains a historical, indeed, continuing blight on Christian communions, particularly white Baptists, in the American South and beyond. Among other ethical miscarriages, the use of scripture to defend chattel slavery illustrates the way in which pro-slavery advocates used biblical texts to undergird a particular political and cultural practice, all the while claiming a public role as moral arbiters against a culture of worldliness and sin. Likewise, their support for slavery reflects the way in which a literalistic hermeneutic aided faith communities in linking biblical authority to a practice that contradicted the Christian gospel.

In other words, pro-slavery religionists made support for slavery synonymous with Christian orthodoxy. Implicitly and explicitly, they suggested that if the Bible was wrong in sanctioning slavery, it might be untrustworthy on the nature of salvation itself. At the same time, many of the same Baptist college founders—Richard Furman (Furman University), Samuel Wait (Wake Forest), Thomas Meredith (Meredith College), and the 4 founding faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (originating on the Furman campus), were slaveholders

As far as the topic of uniquely cruel slavery goes, history is filled with even more barbaric tales of slavery through the ages. Think of those poor Aztecs that were forced to work the silver mines in Mexico for instance, unbelievably brutal and dangerous work.

Persons enslaved through acts of war do not retroactively cease to have been so if bought by a neutral third party, so I fail to see how that is relevant?
It seems your goal is to fail to see how that is relevant.

Those 'poor Aztecs' were a bunch of greedy bloodthirsty scum. Think of their fate as merely reaping what they sowed for hundreds of years of abusing everybody else around them. And, most 'native American' tribes liked to torture captive for fun and entertainment and they also had slaves; few of them lived very long, though. The Aztecs liked to murder people and use their heads for footballs, fun pagan stuff like that, and they loved tossing young girls into volcanoes and deep water filled pits. You want to lean more about those 'poor innocent natives', get a copy of Indians, Settlers, and Slaves in a Frontier Exchange Economy Daniel Usner, Jr. , for one, and then there is a site putting together a history of North American tribes before The evil white Man came along, documenting the various genocidal tribal wars, and how easy it was to hire any tribe to murders other tribes for a few kegs of crappy booze. They were not 'victims', they were full players, and nasty ones to boot. Forget the stupid Hollywood fantasy garbage about them being some sort of environmentalist hippie commune culture just sitting around making handicrafts, smoking pot, and pondering Deep Thoughts n Wise Sayings N Stuff.

OK, so the leaders likely got what they deserved. How does that translate to the poor SOB working in the mines? Sorry to break it to you but every one of us likely had a slave or two as ancestors.

I hate to break it to you, but the vast majority of the time all govts. reflect the values of the people they govern, and so it is with asshole Aztecs. Any govt. that aren't are always temporary and soon tossed out. For instance, we know most American voters actually love corruption in government, otherwise they wouldn't keep voting for it over and over and over again.

I really don't know how to respond to this except to gaze in wonder out the window and contemplate the vastness of space.

You just showed the weakness of your position.
There is no position and there is no argument. You are an individual who when confronted with facts that didn't conform to your vague ideas about something, decided to throw a tantrum in posts #98 and #131.
The history forum is plagued quite enough by conspiracy theorists and nationalists, we don't need internet tough guys(c) too. There is the basement for that.

Just smoke another joint and listen to a Disney soundtrack. You can recover.
