I don't know this is completely so. I don't think Germans are particularly hated today. The stain of the nazi will forever be, but most nations have skeletons in their closets if one looks. What happened in Germany in WWII happened to other nations in the past. IMO the Germans' biggest fault was a feeling of super-nationalism -- that their culture and government and people were superior to others and destined to rule and were willing to put their faith in a leader whom appeared to could deliver on that perceived destiny. IMO WWII fundamentality changed the German (and even European) character in that regard.

Ironically, there are a lot of Americans I have seen with a similar super-nationalistic atittude: The view that US culture and system is superior, we have a right to install in on others, and if they don't accept it or resist, nuke 'em.

It saddens me to hear your words Renald. Sometimes in Israel, I catch a glimpse of a camp tattoo on a survivor's arm. Walking past sidewalk cafe's, I oftentimes hear a young tourist speaking German. The two worlds exist here, the suffering past and the innocent present, and for the most part they mingle freely without embarassment or recrimination.

The Israeli people harbor no hatred for the Germany of today. The past cannot be undone, but the Germans of today should not - and cannot - be held accountable for the horiffic deeds that preceeded them. That responsibility lies soley with the perpetrators, and it shall follow them to the grave and beyond.
