They don't have the balls to do something as audacious as refusing to leave office, but they can see that Trump has the courage to do something like that if he was inclined to do so.

But there is nothing that Trump has done in office that would suggest that he would break the law that way. He has always followed the law and stayed within his authority in his executive actions. All of his actions are predicated on the basis of legal council. Even the celebration he held in the White House Lawn for the RNC was cleared with the election commission before hand.

When investigating a crime and determining whether a suspect is possibly the culprit, they look for Motive, Opportunity and Means.

Motive:
He knows that he's under investigation in the SDNY and NY State and may face prosecution if he loses.
He's already said that if he wins, the election was fair but if he loses, it was fraudulent and rigged. e.g. heads I win, tails you lose. Whatever the vote, he'll declare that he won. That's why it's important to defeat him in a landslide.

Opportunity and Means are combined:
He's constantly telling us that mail-in votes are fraudulent, contrary to any evidence.
He's sabotaged the Postal Service and slowed the mail, with the only possible rationale to affect the election.
Thus, he's setting himself up to challenge the election results.
His niece wrote in her book that his personality is to maintain power and expects that he'll try to stay in office, even if he loses.
It's not that hard a stretch to think that he'll try to stay in office by any means.
