Roughly one in three people now turning 65 will require nursing home care at some point during his or her life. Over three-quarters of long-stay nursing home residents will eventually be covered by Medicaid. Many American voters think Medicaid is only for low-income adults and their children — for people who aren’t “like them.” But Medicaid is not “somebody else’s” insurance. It is insurance for all of our mothers and fathers and, eventually, for ourselves.
When Medicaid was enacted in 1965, its original purpose was to assist the most highly improvished citizens of the United States. The probem with Medicaid is that the Democrats have simply made Medicaid overcrowded and unsustainable.
I certainly believe having Medicaid is better than being uninsured however in no way is Medicaid even comparable to Private Insurance. Too be honest, it is debatable if Medicaid even works. Does having Medicaid make your life remarkably better than being uninsured? Highly debatable.
The most damning reason why Medicaid needs to be gutted is through this statistic:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...4576dc0f39d_story.html?utm_term=.e9510b6e3e50
Cost of Medicaid in 2016: $389 Billion
Projected cost of Medicaid in 2027: $650 Billion
Medicaid is bankrupting our states. How does Medicaid make up 8-12% in the 80's and early 90's to now 20-25% of the state's budget today?
People on Medicaid do not have real high quality access to doctors or even dentists. More people today are covered by Medicaid vs Medicare. As baby boomers are aging, this only burdens good and decent taxpayers who are paying for this broken program.
As bad as Medicaid is, how on earth can Democrats and liberals argue that Medicaid needs to expanded??? Not only will this cost more but again, its original purpose was designed to assists a select demographic.
If I had to choose, I would support defunding medicaid and using that money elsewhere. I can name at least 5-10 things where money would be better spent on this disastrous program.

I have a GREAT IDEA; we can increase the military budget by 1/2 TRILLION, go bomb the Hell outta everything we don't agree with as a nation, which we already do, and screw those on Medicare.
There, problem solved :mrgreen:
I wonder how many people we could afford to cover if we stopped spending billions of dollars a year in our "war on terrorism"? I would much rather my tax dollar go to helping someone cover their medical care than spending it on drone strikes.
Why do GOPs in congress always want more for defense than the president, including trump ?
my Mother & Father both went through some tuff times with long term health issues, medical expenses, and long term care but they planned ahead & purchased 'long term coverage' that paid for a large portion of their finals expenses, i.e. hospice & nursing home care.
Long term coverage is very expensive & it WON'T pay for everything but it will pay for a lot; purchase & lock in your costs before age 59.

We just dodged that bullet with my mother-in-law. When Medicare ends their rehab coverage, Medicaid kicks in. But, when they do, the feds take all your stuff and sell it off - house, car, furniture, bank account, etc. - to use all that money first.
It's a little different for republicans when dealing with Medicaid and Medicare when it strikes a family member at home. GOP orthodoxy, which I agree with on this issue, says no free givernment money until your assets are gone, as happened to my Mother.
Assisted living averages about $53,000 a year in the USA. Mother gets Social security and Father's Air Force pension, which covers only half the cost. Medicaid now gets the other half since she's broke, giving her an allowance of $90 a month, not nearly enough to cover needs.
That's where children/family can and should come in with toilet personnels, beauty/hair needs, cable, phone, etc.; I refuse to short her quality of life from pre-assisted living. Assisted covers all meals; the more tri-care covers like individualized pharmeds amongst other things, the less Medicare/Medicaid ?? has to cover.
There will come a time when means and asset testing of 'family' will be taken into account for all government freebies. Means and asset testing is the only way out of the public pension debt;
It makes no sense to give multi-millionaires social security; It makes no sense for Feds and states to give COLA to people like you and I with public pensions 5 or more times FPL;
I fully expect to have to cover more of Mother's assisted living when GOPs cut Medicaid, which will take the assets of the elderly away at a far greater rate ;
Your post accusing 'emotional blackmail tactics on Medicaid' is a giant BOIL, Blatant Outrageous Irrational Lie, and has zero to do with what I posted; which is why I didn't post it to you ;Using emotional blackmail tactics does not make medicaid a good idea.

Seniors & Medicare and Medicaid Enrollees. Medicaid provides health coverage to more than 4.6 million low-income seniors, nearly all of whom are also enrolled in Medicare. Medicaid also provides coverage to 3.7 million people with disabilities who are enrolled in Medicare.
There are no easy answers when it comes to assisted living expenses. My wife and I were able to choose to have my mother-in-law move in with us. Not everyone has that as an option. But, you're correct about means testing - it's been ignored far too long. Means testing is used to prevent a person from getting some government programs when they make too much money, but it should also be done with all other government freebie programs. Social Security and Medicare are different animals, however. We pay into them with our FICA taxes every time we get a paycheck, and they are true entitlements, as are veteran benefits, since they are paid into and earned by the recipient. Now, Medicaid and all the other government freebies? They are not true entitlements and should be means tested.
Or put everything in a family members name. You can do that 5 years before you need medicare and medicaid
It's very complicated to shelter assets and has moral questionability. If you want to do this, hire a lawyer who specializes. They run about $5K and worth it.Or put everything in a family members name. You can do that 5 years before you need medicare and medicaid

What's your alternative? Who will pay for/insure someone who needs care but is at or below the poverty line?
In capitalism, businesses go out of business when they can no longer sustain their life. Why should the government prop up people? Is living in a horrible nursing home or in a hospital bed really living?
