Why is Russia using Hypersonic cruise missiles in Ukraine?

We have known that the Russian's had developed hypersonic cruise missiles and our satellites can now detect their use, so why use them in Ukraine? One reason is to insure that we can not knock them down before reaching their targets, which makes some sense. The other might be that they are running out of their normal cruise missiles. Hypersonic cruise missiles cost at least a third more than regular cruise missiles and in our country about 2.5 million dollars apiece. So which do you think is the reason or are both involved?

That makes sense to me, but I'd add that at some point, all militaries desire to test their latest and greatest weapons in an actual conflict, and this is probably another motive behind their use in this theater. They have the added value of intimidating NATO forces, and people living in NATO countries.

Much of what Putin is doing now in leveling Ukrainian cities isn't just for the Ukrainians, but also for audiences in NATO countries. He wants not only to break the will of Ukrainian resistance but also the will of civilians in NATO democracies to get fully behind their support of NATO. To that end, I don't think Putin's nuclear and hypersonic bluster is going to succeed, but it will certainly make leaders of NATO think very carefully about how they want to proceed in dealing with Putin's regime.

I suspect it's because due to our & NATO military technology & armament flooding the Ukraine, the Ukrainian air defense is fairly robust.

Actually it does. The military feels that the cost of the hypersonic missiles is not worth the extra it provides. We are building them and have them available, but will mostly use the old type missiles. The hypersonic missiles are mostly used with nukes, conventional use is really not warranted considering their cost.
