Why Hillary Clinton is going after voter ID laws

The former (and future?) presidential candidate just made her most overtly political speech since stepping down as the nation's top diplomat

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ended a self-imposed political hiatus on Monday, slamming Republican-backed voter ID laws in a biting speech in San Francisco.

Clinton said the Supreme Court in June had done serious damage with its landmark Voting Rights Act ruling, which cleared the way for states with a history of discrimination to tighten voting laws without federal approval. She also denounced voter ID laws pushed through by state legislatures controlled by the GOP, saying they were being justified as tools to fight the "phantom epidemic of voter fraud," but really just made it harder for minorities and the poor to exercise their voting rights. She referred to North Carolina's new election rules, which were signed into law by Republican Gov. Pat McCrory this week, as the "greatest hits of voter suppression."

This ladies and gentlemen is what you call "race baiting"
Nice try though:)

"Not every obstacle is related to race, but anyone who says that racial discrimination is no longer a problem in American elections must not be paying attention," Clinton said.

Yea, it was me...

Give me a break. You can't even buy cold medicine these days without ID.

If a "phantom epidemic" exists, it must be the invisible scores of nameless, faceless, ghostly voters floating around that are supposedly disenfranchised by voter ID laws.

Indeed and it was done by Clinton. There was absolutely no need to invoke "minorities" as she did. If she believes, as some falsely claim, that the poor are negatively impacted by voter ID laws - that would be ALL the poor. Unless she seriously believes wealthy minorities are also impacted negatively by the voter ID laws. You'll have to convince us that she's that stupid.

She needs to raise her political profile.

She isn't wrong.

More importantly, my point is that the only reason you added that was to turn this into race debate which it didn't have to be.

The justification of the voter ID laws is a "phantom epidemic" of voter fraud. It's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. The real reason for the voter ID laws is to prevent minorities and the elderly from voting because they usually vote for democrats.

How would you like it if the tea party was prevented from voting?

A democratic candidate making a speech about issues that are important to democratic voters? Say it ain't so!

She isn't wrong.
Yes, maybe next time she'll enlighten us with something like, "anyone who says that cancer is no longer a problem must not be paying attention" or "anyone who says water flows uphill must not be paying attention" - nice to see that she's distinguishing her views from the views of essentially nobody.

When voting is illegal, only criminals will vote. More than once, more than likely.

Yeah, it was you. Everytime someone mentions a legitimate concern about racism...people like you pull the race card.

Conservatives just love logical fallacies.

That would be incorrect because identity politics (in this case, made up Black and Hispanic voter suppression) is a Progressive trademark and will continue to be in the 2014/2016 elections.

Eh, don't like it when anyone is preventing from legally voting. But regardless of whether voter fraud is a real issue for you or not, it's doesn't make your statements about the effects of voter ID laws any less false. The elderly and minorities are not prevented from voting with these laws.

The dirt poor have always had a tough time with registration and voting, but not for lack of ID.

It's about politics and you know it. You also know I know the difference

Except there is no "legitimate concern about racism" here, only the invocation of race to further her political career. Tell us again how Hillary legitimately believes voter ID laws restrict the voting of wealthy minorities.

Blacks were early voters and tended to vote on Sundays. North Carolina just eliminated early voting and voting on Sundays.

it isn't made up. Hilary isn't a progressive. I have no idea what you are claiming to be incorrect either.

Yes because in your mind balck people and democrats are the only ones to vote early and on Sundays. :lamo

Btw, what does that have to do with voter ID laws?

Older voters usually vote for democrats? Since when?

Your denial and hyperbole that it's a legitimate concern, suggests that it is a concern.

Because in your mind you hate blacks. I didn't say they were the only ones. But blacks and the elderly overwhelmingly are early voters and they vote for democrats.
