Why Football Should Be Banned

And USA high school fans are acting like the rest of the world now, getting in object and insult throwing contests. What a whiny bunch of asswipes who want the same respect as football. Parents/fans instigate chippy garbage on the field and constantly bitch at the refs.

there has been a huge push to make soccer the big sport Its failing. Its boring to watch, it causes massive amounts of injuries and soccer coaches are predatory. Our local paper noted how spring girls sports have been decimated (track and softball) by HS Soccer coaches telling their girls they better play select or club soccer all spring or summer if they want to play on the fall varsity team. the retention rate of soccer is not any better than football as almost all HS players never play after school

we would be better off encouraging kids to play lifetime sports like tennis

I lost my other reply due to waiting too long. We see volleyball do this to girls basketball and softball/baseball and football have "open" gym all winter, hurting other sports. It's tough on the kids with helicopter parents and such a high level of competition, especially at bigger and recruiting schools.

A reason so many Americans argue over such stupid, partisan politics is because they are brain dead, at the very least brain damaged, from football. And this claim is substantiated by a new study correlating five years of intensive research which has come to the conclusion that football, at least at the college level, causes CTE, a type of neurological disorder.

That explains Texas

No, not European football. American football.

Young boys starting their football "careers" get thousands of small hits, tackles, slams, bumps and head bangs -- all of which can and do add up to serious medical conditions by the time they are playing college football. At least this is what physicians, such as Dr. Robert Stern, at places like Boston University medical group, have concluded after intensively studying the brain tissue of many players and the effect football impacts have over the long-term.

So it's high-time this senseless and stupid blood sport -- enjoyed mostly by the intellectually-challenged -- be acknowledged for what it is.

Of course a leftist would post something like this. What do you suggest, we all play a sissy sport like soccer?

Not going to happen.

Football is only gaining in popularity.

I am pumped up about the start of college football season tomorrow! Go CANES.

Ha! American Football is a "blood Sport?" Have you ever seen rugby? American footballers need a rest every 20 minutes and have to wear body armour. The only thing rugby players have to wear is a gum shield.

American Football vs Rugby - Difference and Comparison | Diffen

That's 18400lbs for American football 25600lbs of force for rugby. Sport has got nothing wrong with it, so be it if it is violent, the players know the risks and put themselves in for it.

Yeah but American football players are better athletes and the impact forces are much greater. If you were to sustain those forces without any kind of padding, you'd shatter bones.

I don't mind watching a bit of egg-chasing from time to time, whether it's rugby, gridiron or aussie rules. I do think that gridiron needs to get to grips with the head and neck injury issue as with time people are going to start opting to play different sports with less possibility of major neurological disability. There was a time when there were fewer options and everyone was expected to play the same sports at school. Now I don't believe that's true and, of your indigenous sports, gridiron looks to be the vulnerable one at a grass-roots level.

However the padding does help increase the impact force and due to the angle when they go in, it is naturally more forceful than rugby in the individual tackle. Yeah, but the fact that American Football has so many breaks (between each play, quarter, half, etc) allows for a more explosive athlete.

Think of the difference between sprinters and endurance runners.

Rugby and soccer are endurance sports, with no breaks... they are constantly running. This emphasizes the type of body you see on the left. American Football is played in a series of sprints... you go really hard for 6 seconds, then you rest, then you go really hard, then you rest.

That is why American Football players are much more muscular, stronger, and run faster/more explosively than rugby players. That is also why they tackle much harder.

I support making players aware of the risks (I'm pretty sure the NFL already does, just look at the warning labels on their helmets), but I think it's over the top to ban football all together. No one's forcing you to play, nor is anyone forcing the players to play. By your logic, we should also ban cigarette's. I smoke, and I understand the risks (certainties is a better word) should I not be allowed to smoke?

Did anyone tell op this forum is owned by a person who lives in Texas? Just sayin'.

Fair enough, but the body shape also varies on position, for example the guy on the left would likely be a winger whereas this guy is a Prop:

The Wingers need to be light and quick whilst the props must be chunky and forceful in the scrum.
Also, presuming that American Football players are "much more muscular, stronger, and run faster/more explosively than rugby players." is an unsupported assumption.

Chris Johnson (running back) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Is Carlin Isles the world's fastest rugby player? – Rugby videos of tackles, tries, funny incidents and more – Rugbydump.com

Chris Johnson is one of the fastest players in the NFL yes? According to Wikipedia:
With an unofficial personal best of 10.38 seconds in the 100 meters
Whereas Carlin Isles
reportedly has a personal best of 10.13 seconds for the 100m dash

The Reason American Football players have more muscle is because in rugby it is not required to tackle (Only the props need it due to the scrum). The Skinniest guy alive could tackle a 17 stone prop charging towards him if he had the balls to do it.

In the scrum you have 10 men who are 15 stone or over trying to push each other around whilst not collapsing, that takes strength whereas the only strength involved in American Football is how forcefully you can smash into another player.

I hardly think this is the problem you're making it out to be. By the time you get to the college level, there are roughly 68,000 football players spread across all the colleges in the US. This is compared to 21.8 million college students total. This means roughly 0.3% of college students play football.

Even if you look at high school football, there are roughly a million high school football players (not all of whom will play for all 4 years) compared to 14.8 million high school students. This comes out to about 7 percent.

Those numbers don't seem to be anywhere near high enough to account for the effect you're proposing.

You just wouldn't LISTEN when the coach told you to wear the helmet! :D
