Why Does NC-17 Exist?

If you read my post, I compare it to the commercial stigma faced by NC-17 a few years ago ...

OK, but I don't think it's really like that.

The younger your audience can skew, the more you can expect to make at the box office. That's actually not new; G-rated movies have been the biggest performers for decades.

Yes, but adults are the market most directly effected by less of a need to go to the theater. Most rather sit at home, drink a beer and enjoy the movie, less free time, etc. So there is an even more focus on teens, family experiences, and children.

That's among the reasons why there's more money in the less-"restrictive" ratings.

They &*might* make up for it with dvd sales and purchased downloads, but at that point the material is so easily pirated that it creates a questionable point to rely on. hence why studios still favor the traditional model of theater releases

It takes a LOT more than that to get an NC-17, and there is no X. No idea what you're talking about, as usual.

Showing a penis gets you NC-17.

Tits are a bit more liberal, but show bush and chances are you are close to NC-17.

Point is, blood and guts does not even get you thrown off prime time tv in the US, but a breast or profanity is taboo. Have you seen Bones lately... talk about blood and guts and it is one of the most popular shows out there. Of course that is not a movie but still.

Numerous movies reveal this for the buffoonery it is.

And this.

Why do you insist on commenting when you don't know what you're talking about?

So what?

american psycho-R rating

Monster's ball-R rating

Eyes Wide Shut- R rating

Sex and the City-R rating

Boogie Nights-R rating

Holy Smoke-R rating

Includes penis and vag shots and in no way exhaustive.

Walk Hard, Fight Club, American Reunion . . . I don't have a catalog of cinematic penises, but those are more off the top of my head.

not to mention the UK is rather infamous for their forced editing and banning of films

american psycho-R rating

Original version was NC-17. Heavily edited to get R rating. They removed a lot of the sex and violence

Monster's ball-R rating

Original version was NC-17. Heavily edited to get R rating.

Eyes Wide Shut- R rating

Original version was NC-17. Heavily edited to get R rating. The orgy scene was heavily cut.

Sex and the City-R rating

Eh? That has a PG rating.. There is nothing in that movie what so ever to justify anything near R.. no violence and certainly no nudity :)

Boogie Nights-R rating

Again, was edited to get its R rating.

Holy Smoke-R rating

It got its R rating because of one scene basically, else it was PG movie.

Includes penis and vag shots and in no way exhaustive.

Yes some do, but depending on the content of the rest of the film then it can easily go NC-17 and requires editing to get it down to R. The SAW movies come to mind.. they are all R, and were edited down from NC-17.. although frankly they should have stayed there.

List of NC-17 rated films - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A nice list of all the movies who were edited to R rating.

Anyone remember this scene from an R-rated movie? Why might you remember it?

At the R-rating, they still contained the nudity.

What other movies come to mind . . .

Starship Troopers.

Color of Night.

Wild Things.

8 MM.

Knocked Up.

The Lover.

Bruno.

I'm sure I could think of them all day if I wanted to.

Quite. And that's the UK government, not a voluntary rating system.

Gilles Marini does a full frontal shot in sex and the city

the chainsaw chase scene wasn't edited out of the R-rated version for american psycho, which is where the penis shot is, and kidmans full frontal shot doesn't take place in the orgy. So it still seems you have no idea what you speak of

So lets follow the evolution of your argument here pete: first it was tits and penis will get you an nc-17 rating; then penis and vag; then penis vag and additional content ...

lol, so to recap, it take stuff beyond penis, vag, and tits to get an nc-17 rating like Hershaw and I originally argued.

that co-ed shower scene in starship troopers was glorious as a pre-teen

PS robocop had an x or nc-17 rating, if I recall. Which clearly wasn't based on nudity, because there isn't much

Robocop was released after X was abolished and before NC-17 was created.

But yeah, extreme violence WILL get you there, too.

Really? Maybe that's why the criterion release was such a big deal and they just never released the edition that was "above R", or maybe it was the film that instigated the nc-17 rating. I just recall the criterion release being tied into some rating controversy

He even thought there was still an X rating.

Yes but no where near as graphic as the original version...in many cases it is the male penis that is the difference between an R and NC-17. I cant remember any full frontal male in an R movie and down... I mean a real penis, not the fake crap in Boggie Nights for a few seconds where you can discuss if there is one or not.

If you want to watch porn, just go watch porn. Let others alone to have family entertainment if they want, it's none of your business.

The big problem we have in the US is that if a Liberal decides upon something, Liberalism decrees that everyone must have to put up with it, not just the individual Liberal. I don't want to look at sexualized men. That should be OK with the Liberals, but it's not.

We both just cited multiple movies that show penis with an R-rating, and now you're claiming "graphicness" as the distinction for an NC-17 rating. This thread has consisted of nothing but you claiming something being the nc-17 threshold, being proven wrong, and you shifting the goal; posts to some new standard.

It's obvious you have no idea what you are talking about

I listed any number of movies which had it, as did Dr. C. What you "remember" means diddly-squat. Never mind that there's no guarantee you've even seen the R cuts which played here.

You're just plain wrong.
