For all his obvious faults (and they are legion) Donald Trump is not and has never been remotely as evil as Hitler was.
So you're saying, "At least Trump didn't succeed at becoming a murderous fascist dictator!"
Ever hear the phrase "damn with faint praise?"
Yet in a number of ways, Trump opponents treat him worse than they would Hitler.
Seriously?!?
Let's get real. Trump wants to turn the US into a Banana Republic -- all to feed his ego and bank account. If he was more competent, we'd be on the verge of a civil war right now. (We're already perilously taking steps in that direction.)
To wit: Trump repeatedly relies on the Authoritarian Playbook, including but not limited to:
• Wants maximum power with minimum responsibility
• Deliberately undermines the legitimacy of the government, especially other branches
• Attacks on the press
• Refers to opponents and the press as "enemies of the people" (one of Stalin's favorite slurs)
• Violates norms, constantly, to his advantage
• Exploits and widens political and partisan divisions
• Unleashes a firehose of lies and disinformation, on a daily basis
• Demands one-way loyalty from everyone
• Refuses to accept electoral defeat
• Tries to subvert judicial independence
• Proclaims he favors "law and order," while actually disregarding and subverting the rule of law
• Makes a big show of military trappings (remember when he wanted a Communist-style military parade?)
• Indulge in rampant corruption and self-dealing
• Encourage conspiracy theories and empower conspiracy theorists
Once an autocrat has seized power, they rarely give it up, and often severely damage their nation. Erdogan, Putin, Duterte, Orban -- all admired by Trump -- followed that same pattern. (So did Chavez, Maduro, Pinochet and so on.)
Oh, and let's not forget that Trump is a racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, transphobic, crude, narcissistic bully... who encouraged his followers to ATTACK CONGRESS so that he could remain in office.
Last but not least: Republicans and conservatives spent the past decade heaping the same kind of rhetoric (if not worse), with basically no justification whatsoever, on Obama, Biden, and Harris. Physician, heal thyself.
Sure, he's not as bad as Hitler. But he is almost certainly the 2nd or 3rd worst President in US history. The only worse ones are Pierce and Buchanan, who utterly failed to deal with slavery, and lit the fuse on the Civil War.
I could go on, but hopefully by now you get the picture.
A President doesn't need to slaughter millions in order to justify stiff criticism and opposition.
