Correct me if I’m wrong but the wall was Trumps main political promise during the entire campaign but yet it took two years and the giving up of control of congress before the big push came for wall funding which has now resulted in a government shutdown. Why? Was it on purpose to wait? Was it bureaucracy that caused the delay? Was it just poor planning? Is it cynical of me to think that it was intentional? Full disclosure I don’t personally support the wall or the shutdown but I am curious why it became a crisis right before the mid terms but not during the first two years.

Why? Because Trump wants a Wall Fight and not waiting would have forced him to deal the reality of his own party's unwillingness to fund his Wall. He wants a fight. But he did not want a fight with Republicans.

But you have uncovered the ugly truth of this whole mess. Trump did not even believe in his stupid Wall. Again, Trump wants a Wall Fight. He never actually wanted this Wall. He will surely take it if you give it to him as he painted himself into this corner and then somehow convinced himself that he could fight and connive and extort his way out of it.

I'll correct you, since you are wrong.

The wall was ONE of Trump campaign issues, but he had others that were just as important. I'm not sure where you get the idea that it was the "main political promise". Perhaps from the media?

Trump made a big push for wall funding in late 2017 and early 2018. It didn't work out. So no...he didn't wait until now.

This is a diversionary tactic to take focus off the Russia investigation and to punish the FBI and stymie the investigation. Those who haven't figure that out already are pretty naive in my opinion.

Thats a great question and really a black eye to both Trump and all the GOP that stands for it. They SHOULD have pressed for it day one but frankly, I dont think the GOP had the stomach for the fight and I doubt Trump thought they would lose the House.

Border security did not 'become' a crisis all of sudden. Democrats have spoke extensively about the dire situation at the border for decades. You might as readily ask why democrats suddenly oppose wall funding when in the past they have voted for it so often...and that also comes down to the same thing...politics over country.

But you are a Trump sycophant incapable of being critical of the president. You pretzel yourself daily, expend hundreds of posts defending him at every turn. You have zero credibility on the subject.

True, he did have another campaign promise that was just as important. It was called "repeal and replace the ACA with something much better and make sure everyone has great beautiful insurance". That worked well, didn't it?

There was no national crisis before the Democrats won the House. His party controlled the House for 2 years. The OP is absolutely correct. He didn't demand that his party give him his border wall money when they had a chance.

Trump thought he could win this, and as it turns out, he didn't.

And mexico paying for that wall was the rest of that particular promise. His own party wouldn't give him the money and so he took america hostage after ann and rush hit his ego and called him a failure.

Trump shut down the gov't in 2017 and 2018? Really?

In his arrogance, he thought he could win this. He waited for it, picked a fight and thought being willing to shut down government would scare the Dems. Then, in his idiocy, he laid out his plan for the world and said he would own it. All the Dems had to do was play his clip and be as stubborn as him.

Personally, I do blame a lot more than Trump on this one, but you can't deny he is the one that started the battle and then handed off the win.

Now he can't even find a strategy. Compromise, bluff to barge into the House, blame the other guys. He's trying it all and Pelosi and Schumer have been holding all the cards ever since he told everyone what was coming and he would take the blame.

There might still be a stalemate or even a win in it for Trump, but I personally don't see it at this point.

The problem is Pelosi doesn't have a checkmate to play right now. Until he changes strategies, we are in shutdown and watching the game play out.

To be honest, I don't give a damn about the wall. I don't care which side looks good. I just want these games to stop getting worse and worse every year. End this crap.

Of course it was on purpose. Can’t use the dirty Messicans as a cudgel against the Dems when you hold all the cards.

You’re right; he also campaigned on putting Hillary Clinton in jail. Anything to rile up the pig-ignorant goobers that comprise his base.

Because Trump is not a rational sane person.

And they still do and they want border security. They simply don't believe that physical border over the entire Southern border is the answer....that is if they ever did. Republicans don't either. That is the reality of the box Trump stuck himself into, a box with no doors, not even a trap door. Sweet move, Mr Great Negotiator.

I am at a loss to call anything a "silver lining" when we are going through such a dangerous moment with so many already suffering for a FABRICATION (and I don't mean composite material construction either). But if anything is finally going to put a nail in any hope DonDon has for 2020, this is it!

I am daily stunned by Trump's lack of intellectual depth or breadth and the complete staggering incompetence of the people around him.

They have both put themselves in their own box...but Trump's box has an escape hatch. That's why he'll win. He'll be the one to end the shutdown and he'll still build his wall.

Nancy and Chuck will be left to both literally and figuratively scream at the night sky.

Not to sound naive, but what is his escape hatch?

I'm not. I didn't vote for him, after 36 years of completely supporting Republicans, because I was one of the smart ones who knew how ignorant he was, and knew he would hire ignorant people to be around him. The few smart ones he selected are all gone.

So then if he couldn’t get funding and support for the wall when Republicans had full control why would he assume it would pass and get what he wants with a Democratic controlled house? Was he serious back in 2017 and 2018 or is he serious now about the funding? Seems purely political to me.

Right? If it's such a 'national crisis', why didn't he secure the funding when the Republicans had control of both houses of Congress? But now he's complaining about the Dems being obstructionist, when really it's just him and Mitch McConnell standing in everyone's way.

Thats pretty obvious: he wanted somebody to blame (ie the Dems) in case he failed to get the dinero.

Those of us that have watched Donald for decades would credit him for being so self-centered, narcissistic, self-aggrandizing, unscrupulous and corrupt that we would have always thought he would be able to drop the weights on the scales of decision along those lines and come up with something that fit his own desire to survive.

This might well be the dumbest thing I have ever seen Donald do....way past bankrupting 4 casinos and taking down the USFL via his own narcissistic insanity.... even beyond turning $420M of current value inheritance into $960M of debt. This is even beyond running for public office in the first place which will likely doom his entire family to eventual disaster or ex-patriot status in some country that will take them.

He has been flimflammed by Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh. I always thought electing this idiot would put the country at extreme risk, far beyond any benefit any single voter thought they would get out of it. I never ever thought I would see the day when Trump would paint himself into such a corner and then let the likes of Coulter and Limbaugh flimflam him.

Because Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity and the idiots on Fox and Friends told him to.

Yes...we have already had this discussion> Democrats DO believe in border walls...so long as they are effective. Which means walls are NOT in fact racist, or evil, or vile, and the bull**** they are saying now is nothing more than ridiculous political posturing.

John McCain, and Jeff Flake. He had the votes in the House but not the Senate, and he knew it. One of those guys is dead, and the other lost his election. He now has the votes in the Senate BUT not the house. See how that works? :)
